Due to the ongoing covid-related absences, exacerbated by the sheer numbers who are required to self-isolate although not actually ill, or even infected, Plymouth CityBus has withdrawn temporarily a number of journeys effective from today (Monday 10th January). Most routes are affected to some degree. The changes will last until 30th January when the situation will be reviewed, hopefully by then the staffing situation will allow at least some of the withdrawn journeys to be reinstated. www.plymouthbus.co.uk/service-updatesMeanwhile in Torquay the changes related to the closure of the railway bridge at Livermead duly took place from Monday 3rd January. Routes 12 and 22 have temporary timetables, with a reduced level of service on route 12, and both routes are diverted around the road closure. Gold is suspended between Torquay and Paignton Bus Station, but runs to the same times between Paignton and Plymouth. These changes are until early March (8th is the quoted date). To facilitate the works the rail service between Newton Abbot and Paignton is suspended over the weekends of 8/9 and 15/16 January, no dedicated rail replacement bus service is being provided but rail tickets are being accepted on route 12.

Journeys to and from Dawlish Warren are on diversion between the Moor Lane stops on Teignmouth Road, Watcombe, and the Teignmouth side of Shaldon Bridge. Buses divert in both directions via Moor Lane, Barton Hill, The Willows, A380 and A381.

The indoor waiting area at The George Park & Ride site in North Plymouth will reopen from Monday 31st January. The waiting area has been closed since the start of the covid pandemic but is being brought back into use as the work from home guidance has been lifted. The waiting area has toilets including a fully accessible facility, and two showers for use by cyclists who arrive at the site by bike and continue their journey by bus.
The area will have a member of staff on site on Mondays to Fridays from 06.30 to 15.30, able to give general advice and assistance.
The George Park & Ride is served by Plymouth CityBus routes 42 and 42C and Stagecoach routes 1 and 101, all of which operate into the City Centre via Derriford Hospital, as well as Oakley's rural route 59 which operates four times a day and takes a roundabout route into Plymouth via a number of small villages on the edge of Dartmoor.

Supported Exeter City route G (Exeter Quays-Hamelin Gardens) has transferred from Country Bus to Greenslades Tours of Exeter from 24th January, apparently due to a shortage of drivers at Country Bus. It is Greenslades first regular bus route and Optare Solo SR YD63 VCJ has been seen on the route. Photo (not mine): flic.kr/p/2mZiBiw

The A379 will be closed at Chillington (between Torcross and Kingsbridge) on weekdays from Monday 7th to Friday 18th February. Stagecoach bus route 3 (Plymouth-Kingsbridge-Dartmouth) will be diverted via an alternative route between Kingsbridge and Strete. Limited minibus shuttle services will operate Kingsbridge-Frogmore, and Strete-Torcross, to connect with the main service. A pre-bookable taxi service will operate between Chillington, Stokenham, Torcross and Kingsbridge, this must be booked at least the day before (if it has not been booked, the taxi will not operate). A special subsidised fare of £1.00 will apply for all passengers, for each journey. The road will be reopened over the weekend of 12/13 February and route 3 will operate normally. www.traveldevon.info/bus/latest-news-service-updates/

Although this diversion finished on 5th February, it will be in place again from Monday 21st February to Friday 25th February (school half-term week) as Shaldon Bridge will be closed to vehicles for repairs. Shaldon Bridge has a lifting span, which an Act of Parliament requires to be maintained in working order even though it was last used for commercial shipping over 90 years ago.

Plymouth CityBus has confirmed that most services will operate normally this evening, and has even managed to reinstate some journeys that had been withdrawn temporarily due to staff shortage, as most school routes are not required.
No news on services starting in North Devon; although Stagecoach had already stated that services from Bude and Torrington outstations would not operate for the rest of the day I was expecting limited services to resume around Barnstaple.
Some disruption to bus and rail services could continue into the weekend as high winds (although not storm force) could hamper the clear-up operation.

Stagecoach has resumed a limited operation on North Devon routes 21 and 21A (near-full timetable from 17.00 although Westward Ho! is not being served), and Barnstaple town services 11A/11C and 19 are also resuming. No other North Devon services will operate for the rest of today.
