Hello all bus enthusiasts. Its been a while since I have posted on this forum so please bear with me. So this is my situation now: My career aspiration has always been to become an airline pilot. I also have a love for buses aswell and for that reason after I finish my college course and hopefully my Car/PCV license, I hope to be a Bus Driver for only one year to save up some money for the expensive pilot course I will do afterwards. I wanted to ask... Before leaving the bus company, is there any chance the company would have a part time job for internal applicants since it would be good for me to earn whilst I do my pilot studies which lasts for two years, in terms of weekend duties either nights/rail replacement, etc? Thank you!

Thank you! Others can comment from direct experience but I think there is nearly always weekend work available for those who hold PCV licenses. I'd guess it is more about whether you are located in the right place to take advantage of the opportunities / your willingness to travel to take on work.

Before leaving the bus company, is there any chance the company would have a part time job for internal applicants since it would be good for me to earn whilst I do my pilot studies which lasts for two years, in terms of weekend duties either nights/rail replacement, etc? Thank you! From what I have seen, some garages have part time rotas but it's not that easy to land that gig. There's often a long, seniority based queue to get on them or you may be able to get it if the company supports flexible working. When I applied for Abellio, they were adamant that they did not do part time contracts. But with a bit of help, I got in on a Saturday/Sunday only contract, but in practice I did Fri/Sat night duties and a late duty on Sundays. This worked for the business as it is not always easy finding someone to cover holiday/sickness on N prefixed routes, where there are obvious challenges getting drivers on day rotas route learned. Weekend night work is a funny one. Few people want to work at this time, yet there is often a queue to join night bus rotas. This means that operators often employ stick, rather than carrot tactics to get the additional weekend duties covered. You'd think bus operators would welcome people who are prepared to commit to weekend nights, but I've only really seen Stagecoach openly advertise vacancies specifically for this purpose. I am of the opinion that if you don't ask, you don't get and don't really believe in the whole giving up at the first hurdle thing. So it's worth pushing the case for working part time, seeing who supports flexible working etc. As for rail replacement, each operator handles it quite differently. Some say they only want experienced drivers who meet strict criteria. Some will pressure any old driver to take on the duty, regardless of whether or not they are suitable. Some force it onto drivers who are spare, some implore drivers to do it as rest day work and others entrust it to drivers supplied by agencies. Some pay significant premiums for rail repalcement duties, others don't and favouritism, nepotism and politics are rife where rail replacement is concerned. As a dedicated RRBS driver I find the whole area fascinating. In the second post, there are some links to companies who specifically recruit for weekend rail replacement drivers - for the kind of casual driving work you seek, these are your best bet. Best of luck with your aspiration to become a pilot - I know a couple and it is a demanding training process, but rewarding in the end!

It sounds like something exciting from space, but I am sure it is much more mundane !

Thank you! Be aware that if you go through training for your PCV license with a bus company rather than paying for it privately, you will have to sign a training bond whereby you agree to pay back the training fees if you leave the company within a specified time period, usually 18-24 months.
