Check out 'Ian Armstrongs web page' for '196' Plenty of photos of the different operators' buses But no L class ... I am pretty sure the Ts at N worked the 196, but as previously stated, no recollection of a L on the route. The arriving L class were destined for other Norwood-based routes as the 196 by then was already fated for Cityrama, therefore never to have an official L class operation. Having checked the Ian Armstrong site (recommended by Jtuthill) there are unfortunately no photos during the official M allocation, which likely means that the opportunity to snap that odd working Ls appears to have been missed.

The 196 did receive a M allocation towards the end of SW operation alongside assistance from Q’s T’s when the VC’s, I believe, were retired early from the 133 & 196 as the 196 was lost to Connex and the 133 converted to NV’s. Can’t help on anything before the VC’s arrival other than what I’ve read in books & online as the VC’s were the first buses on the 196 I remember. One other memory was I remember a Brixton Hill route seeing a DMS working in the early 90’s right before the last ones were retired - I remember it due to the rear with the DMS characteristic indented rear window as apposed to the flat one M’s had. I’d hazard a guess it was an AK route right before it shut but I’m not honestly not sure.

It retained VCs up until then although other types did visit.
From what I remember with the 196, it was converted from VC to T when it moved to Q in 1997 to ease staff shortages at SW. By the time it returned to SW in 1999 a few of the VCs had been transferred elsewhere (commercial services fleet?) so it ended up with a mix of VCs and Ms. There was also that spell in 2000 when Metrobus (the company) were providing drivers for the 196 because of staff shortages at London General; I believe the Metrobus drivers drove Metrobuses on the route but I'm not sure which garage these were based at.

Indeed although the ratio of M's to VC's was more in the M's favour and Q did also help out again at this point with T's as I rode one in 2000 when the M's were also heavily used on the route. I remember the said T as it hadn't been cleaned presumably as people actively got off siting the smell

Kind of gave the NVs from Sutton a bit more use using them on the 133 till early 2003. The VCs seemed to sell easier so they departed first to a company in West Bromwich I think.

Only ever did Brixton to Croydon in those days - would of loved to have done a L journey from Trafalgar Square to Purley. That must have been a near on 90 mins journey. They did only run on Sundays thou i think and maybe early and late journeys. The 109 ran for most of the day Purley-Brixton and Croydon-Trafalgar Square there was some through journeys ie early morning peak hours and late evening. The Purley-Brixton section eventually became a 59 which was in turn replaced by the 109 again when it went OPO

I guess it was efficiency of the being able to run some through journeys but the 1992 change really was just re numbering the 59 as 109 but keeping the sections. The number 59 was straight away used for a couple more years as a peak hour extra from BN to the City.

The number 59 was straight away used for a couple more years as a peak hour extra from BN to the City. It's a bit more complicated than that. That incarnation of the 59 was introduced in February 1985 and was essentially the conversion of the Brixton-Purley journeys to driver-only whilst the main 109 retained crew operation. Journeys to Farringdon Street started in February 1987, at the time the 109 became driver-only. The 59 was reduced to a peak-hour service between Farrington Street and Streatham Hill in March 1992, and was withdrawn altogether at the end of January 1994. The current 59 commenced in September 1999 and, amongst other things, replaced the 109 north of Brixton. Its introduction coincided with the opening of the Jubilee Line Extension at Waterloo. www.londonbuses.co.uk/_routes/withdrawn/059-2.html

Only proper buses were RT and variants and Routemaster.custom made for London Buses not off the peg. And may I ask that threads about bus types be in The Bus Fleet thread not Bus Routes?

The 59/109 saga is a bit like the 1/47/199 where the 199 like the 59 on several occasions replaced part of the 1 and 47 similar to how the 59 replaced parts of the 109.

Trouble is 'off the peg' doesn't stop with those or front engine..... DMS Fleetline (the Standard Leyland engine variant is a proper bus to me....mmmmm manualy driven through the box Leyland growl....) - designed for London, Titan B15 - designed for London, NB4L - designed for London....I dare say there are others....

And may I ask that threads about bus types be in The Bus Fleet thread not Bus Routes? To be fair the thread did start about routes..... I will leave here but if more members request a move I can do it......
