I've seen it work on numerous occasions where the driver has either turned the engine off or threatened to call the police so personally, all drivers should do it rather than turning a blind eye. And then feel like idiot when it doesn't work because no driver will ever call police realistically.

Except I've seen it work before so the proof is already there for it to work - it's about calling someones bluff.

That's the reality of it and the controller would be telling the driver to get going and they'll report the fare dodger to revenue which means nothing will happen so it's understandable that drivers don't bother.

Let the bus sit there for 3 hours, the scumbags would soon get the message and not jump on the bus without paying.
Fare dodging should of been nipped in the bud, just like everything in this bloody country now.

I’ve definitely seen it work effectively everytime I’ve seen that scenario happen. The last time was actually on a route operated by NRMs, the 159. The driver was very vigilant with everyone boarding, and would come on the tannoy and state that he’s not moving the bus until the fare evaders pay, whenever one boarded through either one of the rear doors. Eventually, with a bruised pride, and everyone on the bus getting frustrated of waiting, the fare evaders did either tap in or leave the bus.

The other day someone refused to pay on my bus and I had revenue on. The revenue said this “If you don’t have money you cannot get on the bus” and the revenue inspector got off the bus... What I don’t understand is people wouldn’t class themselves as thieves. You wouldn’t go to the Supermarket and not pay for your goods, but you’ll steal a free ride on Public Transport?

Had just that scenario today on the 57. Driver turned the engine off and refused to move until the person left the bus. After a few minutes, the person gave up and left the bus. At least the driver made an announcement explaining why he was not moving. He even said he was under ‘orders’ from higher up not to move the bus if someone didn’t pay. At least once we were under way, we had a speedy journey and none of that regulation of service nonsense. I had twice experience on same bus of route 162 toward Eltham Station on Saturday. Two girls get on and one of them don't have one, they explain on and on. Driver refuse to let them on it so they get off. Then few stops away along, other two boys get on it and one of them don't have one and they try to explain and allowed one to travel free on bus. Bus driver refuse to let them on and decide to turn the engine off. In the end, they get off the bus. We move on along. Question is, both of then look in teenages and one of them may not have zipcard on them? Recently, I was on the 390 at King’s Cross and someone got on using the backdoor and didn’t pay and the driver turned the ngine off and got out of his cab telling the passengers the bus would not move until the fare dodger either payed or got off. I think this is an effective method of tackling fare evasion because the fare dodger realises that the aren’t going to ge5 anything out of dodging the fare

But now you know what I see more of? 'Genuine' sort of stories I guess I shouldn't judge people from their facial expression and all but lately I see a lot of genuine 'oh noes' and you just sorta feel bad for person in general, so at that point do you just tell with rage to get off if you don't have payment? At this sorta point you should write emergency fare as a bus driver, but when you get no running time at nights or weekends no driver will do it.

I got on a 468 recently, two people walked straight past the driver who called out to them but they didn't hear him, or pretended not to, and went upstairs. No further action was taken, most fare dodgers at least go through the motions of trying to use an invalid oyster.

It is not the driver's job on LTs to monitor who taps in and out. The bus is not designed for him/her to monitor and so any driver holding a LT up has got a problem and is the one causing the problem to passengers. TfL created this issue when it comes to LTs and they should suffer the consequences in lost revenue.

Was about 7:30pm, a ton of people were piling onto an Ilford 425 and as the last person got on the driver closed the door, turned the engine and the lights off, went upstairs to the back of the bus and got the guy to come downstairs and tap his Oyster TT drivers are so sassy I love it, it’s not the first time I’ve seen that from TT drivers either. There was a different thing I saw also on a TT bus a few months back, I was on a packed Ilford 25 pulling into Stratford Bus Station. The driver first opened the rear doors to let us all off, and by then a swarm of people started gathering at the front doors waiting to be let on. As soon as everyone got off the back, this entitled spoilt teenager had the temerity to quickly run on through the back door, brazenly walk to the front of the bus and tap her Oyster card before he’d even opened the front door to let everyone else on. He yelled ‘OI! Get off now and do it properly like everyone else is doing!’ And I was laughing on the other side of my face serves her right hahahahaha
