With news of the Sainsbury's & Asda deal off after CMA blocked the move, it depends on what happens next. Arriva could be bought as a whole, or broken up. The problem is all the speculation. Even the trash mags the Mrs reads have pounced on the stories floating about

Joke to aside I can't believe Arriva is leaving! Arriva is not a work colleague retiring after several years of service at the local Council in the Finance Team I think Arriva will just have new owners, but won't disappear into the history books like Maplin or Toys R Us. The name is good for an international market, Stagecoach is good as well, but I always think of the theatrical acting classes for kids There even used to be a Stagecoach cafe in Chelmsford. This meant that we could see First, Arriva and Stagecoach there.

Now Sainsbury's are not merging with Asda, they need to find a new strategy............so they will buy Arriva!!!!!!!
Bus interiors will all become orange, and there will be special offers...buy two bus journeys and get a banana!!!!! Helping you to live well for less!!!!!!!!!
Also you will be able to 'tap and collect' your shopping!!!!!
Endless possibilities!!!!!!!!! This gives an alternative meaning to The future's bright, the future's orange. Then maybe passengers using Sainsbury's Arriva buses outside London could get Nectar points. Some rail websites eg TPE and Virgin give Nectar points if you book through them. (Disclaimer - other rail websites may offer Nectar points if you book with them too). If Sainsbury's buy Arriva bus then Asda could buy First bus.

Other bidders for Arriva:
Comfort DelGro. There is little overlap in the world apart from north London. So they would potentially divest Arriva former Leaside to a 3rd party, such as Abellio, RATP or Transdev.
Abellio. Likewise little overlap apart from south London. So they would potentially divest Arriva former South London to a 3rd party, such as Metroline, RATP or Transdev.
In both cases I exclude Tower Transit in case either Arriva chunk were too big for them to purchase.

Asda and Arriva could be the tie-up, after all they both start and end eith an A. Walmart could afford it, and are obsessed with trying to keep ahead of Amazon on sales, a race they appear not to have realised they've already lost. Mind you, that horribly insipid green they cover everything in reminds me, in bus livery terms, of Western Greyhound's, and that adventure didn't end well!

How about the re-introduction of East Thames Buses or tfl creating a similar company to operate routes.

I think a joint approach involving two French firms could work, RATP and Transdev or Kelios. If RATP were involved, they would probably only take half of the London market.

Right reading the German press ... the following has come out.
1) Many parties have expressed an interest in purchasing Arriva. 2) Interested parties have been given a September deadline to submit firm offers. 3) If no offers are submitted that are acceptable to DB they will go for an IPO
So basically ... we will know nothing more until September ... unless leaks come out.

Can I speculate? My guess is that the eventual buyer will come totally out of left-field, will surprise us all, and won't be an existing transport group.

Agreed, as a lot of transport companies simply won't be aloud to takeover.

There have been many times a small company has taken over a much bigger one.

There was a bit of joshing on this thread regarding grocery companies. Possibly convincing evidence that life imitates art, and all that, was a report I read last weekend that KKR & Co Inc, the owners of Trainline, are seriously considering buying part of Asda from Walmart, now that Sainsbury have been rebuffed. So maybe a left-field bid for Arriva is not out of the question.
