Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum, although I've been reading for a while.
I was wondering if there are any realistic prospects for future Citaro orders in London? They are my favourite type of bus but they never seemed to really catch on in London.
Is it because of the cost or something else?

Hello and Welcome I am not sure if this is still the case, but TfL have banned Citaro orders due to them not having the Start Stop feature available.

I believe so. It is a big shame as they are excellent performers as long as kept in good conditions and ECUs or fuel pumps not tampered with. Would be good for routes like the 112 or 95 which spend most of their time on fast roads. I appreciate the A40 and A406 resemble car-parks most of the day but a good Citaro would come into its own at any other time of the day/night when roads are flowing better. They also have very good turning circles for their length and could probably out-turn a 10.9m E200 MMC, just watch your tail swing.

Yeah, that’s definitely one of the main reasons if not the main reason itself. Mercedes themselves have also said they won’t be an option with the Citaro so we’re unlikely to see any more now.

Havent they just released a Citaro hybrid though? They were certainly talking about producing one but single decker hybrids have generally been unpopular and TfL have already started the switch to electric so can't see why hybrids would suddenly be allowed?

This is exactly what i was thinking the other day. Perhaps some of the ecitaros? I know they’re very popular in spain, However they have always been a big user of the citaro. And adding onto the hybrid citaro, it still doesn’t have stop start

This is exactly what i was thinking the other day. Perhaps some of the ecitaros? I know they’re very popular in spain, However they have always been a big user of the citaro. And adding onto the hybrid citaro, it still doesn’t have stop start If you read the future mobility stuff, will discover that full hybrids are dying, virtually no development now, and it appears that many manufacturers intend to drop them as their electric bus range takes over. Choice will be just diesel, gas or electric. A bit of energy recovery (often called a micro hybrid) will stay but not full hybrids. Hydrogen is currently in early days A big problem for the e Citaro in London is it is a 75 passenger bus, and TfL doesn’t issue tenders for that capacity (TfL have the rather irregularly spaced sequence of 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 87 passengers) so would need to be an enhanced offer on a capacity 60 or 70 route. These capacities belong to another era (before hybrids, before the 19.5t weight limit) so remains a chance an excess capacity 87 route could change to a 75 capacity electric route) There is a much higher chance in my view, of them appearing in the Heathrow area than on TfL routes www.daimler.com/innovation/case/electric/ecitaro-2.html
