I'm going to dissent here. I don't believe the 38 is "grossly overbussed" at all. The route is so frequent that any gap in the service soon produces extra passengers, and if regular travellers know that there is likely to be a bus behind with spare capacity they are not all going to try to cram on the first one that comes along. Let's hear more calls for maintaining service levels on the 18 and 25 instead of insisting that the 38 be made to suffer in the same way. I tend to agree, certainly the current level of service is needed at Victoria although it might be that the same level of service isn't needed throughout the route. I seem to recall that in Routemaster days there were short workings during peak hours between Victoria and Piccadilly Circus and between Holborn and Hackney Central. Up to a few years ago, the 8 provided an alternative to the 38 for Victoria to TCR/Holborn passengers, while the 73 was much more frequent than its replacement 390 and also provided an alternative for Soho/TCR/ south Bloomsbury. A lot of these morning peak passengers arrive at Victoria on NR services and find the Underground station closed because of overcrowding, which rules the Victoria Line out, and come out into the bus station area to get the first bus going somewhere approximate to where they.re aiming for, using Hopper if necessary. If these passengers only want Hyde Park Corner and there are two or three 38s on stand, they're much more likely to jump on (especially while they remain open boarding) and not so likely to go into Wilton Road and hope a 2, 13 or 36 appears.

Imagine doing the 549 everyday... great route for passengers. I often wonder if the drivers are as content... Given the really good looking rota, I’m pretty sure the 549 drivers are very content!

I'm so glad you have raised these points, I think exactly the same as you. <snip> I'm going to dissent here. I don't believe the 38 is "grossly overbussed" at all. You only have the see 3 38s go past in a row at Piccadilly with very few people on them to see see why I'm saying it's overbussed but I respect you're opinion on it. I'm sure those passengers could wait for 5 minutes like every other passenger has to do in London. All for supporting routes to get saved but at the same time think it's only fair to share what I see on here.

The amount of empty buses that fly through Tottenham Court Road in the peak is ridiculous when there's a 55 carrying a crowded load at the exact same stop. However there have been plenty of times I've also seen busy 38s, to put it this way I'd have much gathered the 38 be the route to take a cut instead of the 25 and 18.

Judging by my frequent observation of the 38, I think it's justified at its current frequency during the peaks. Buses are usually crowded in the busy hours despite the regular bunching that occurs. It's also worth noting that it only takes a relatively small gap between buses for crowds to gather at stops along the West End section of the route because of its volatile nature, especially when you factor in the relatively less frequent 19 alongside which could do with a frequency increase in the peaks. Outside the peaks the 38's frequency can be reduced but fiddling with it during the peaks would be asking for trouble.

Not grossly overbussed and I'm not for most cuts but when other routes that shouldn't have been cut (45, 118 - the former should of been left alone & the latter should be at the 10 min mark), surely the 38 should shoulder a cut of some sort especially when the 18 & 25 have had much more sizeable chunks out of it. The 19 shouldn't be touched or is this on a different level to the 38?

I feel as if most of the passengers on the 139 stand on their senses.
Majority of them are so slow to get on or off the bus especially at Waterloo it's as if they don't want to leave the bus!
They are also so indecisive, they will stand at a stop you'll be there serving the stop they have no interest, until you start moving away or close the doors.
Trip I just had towards Waterloo sitting in traffic from Finchley road all the way to Hendon way. Now as soon as I move away from the kerb and into the third lane to go towards Fortune Green. A guy comes to me and asks if he can get off now. I said what with two lanes of traffic next to me. Why did you not ask to get off at the last stop with was approximately 200 yards behind. He told me to forget it.
Coming back to GG slow moving traffic at West Hampstead, I'm edging towards the bus stop. Woman shouts where are you going can you stop please. I said err I am going to the bus stop?

One might observe 3 empty 38 buses, but that is just a snapshot at one point of the route at one particular time. The frequency has to cater for the busiest time of the day on the busiest section of route. The reason for this is that whatever the frequency it is going to be same on the whole route for the whole day, and so long as that remains, to cater for the busiest time at the busiest point, the frequency is fine, it does not need a cut.

If it is any consolation as a passenger on the 139 I have exactly the same frustrations!!!! The route is just getting worse and worse and worse after finishing 1 hour late yesterday as a coach broke down on Finchley Road two stops from GG. Today was all about the controller. Got told leave GG 9 late @ 1640, I reach Baker Street @ 1720, I reach Orchard Street/Selfridge's @ 1742, I'm supposed to leave Waterloo @ 1800. I reach New Bond Street @ 1756, still get sent to Waterloo with a huge gap Infront and as other buses had been turned to Oxford Circus and Piccadilly. Every stop was 20 or more people, some stops I had to drive past. I reach Waterloo @ 1825, went to the toilet quickly and then departed. A this time controller has not called me to say anything to me baring in mind I'm supposed to be finishing at the garage @ 1930. So he left me to go all the way back to Golders Green in service again no leader, whilst others got turned to Baker Street etc I ended up reaching the garage @ 2008.

Packed busy route with drivers having feather foots, such a depressing route to ride. The 176 is every 10 minutes and slightly more frequent at peak times. I think the more frequent 40 should have been rerouted to Tottenham Court Road, the 45 left going to Clerkenwell Green and the 176 curtailed at Elephant & Castle.

In the evenings you can wait almost up to 13 minutes for a 176. 176 shouldn’t be curtailed at EC as the 40 would them cover almost 65% of its route which is resource wasting. It’s fine as it is but running times need to be looked at.
