I rode on the Goblin around 2 weeks ago and was impressed. I haven't gone on the train line since the early 1980's. I noticed that the platform lengths at stations like Wantead Park, Leyton Midland, Queens Road, Leytonstone High Rd can hold 6 car length trains. However stations like Blackhorse Rd cannot, I guess as the platform was moved to be near the Underground station when that opened near the end of the 60's.

I believe most of the line can actually accommodate 6 car trains, Blackhorse Road is one that's relatively easy to extend. The biggest issue is Gospel Oak because to the East any overhang of the train fouls the points while it's pretty much impossible to extend thee platforms further west due to the link to the North London Line. I'm not sure how long the platforms at Barking Riverside will be although I don't hold much hope for them being able to handle 6 car trains.
The line will be at capacity again soon, there's already plenty of cases with the 4 car trains turning up very crowded and it's just a matter of time until more demand shows up and another fix to the line is required soon. However I think TfL next aim to explore the feasibility of making the line every 12 minutes before considering any infrastructure changes to allow for 5 car trains to operate.

Barking Riverside is being built to 5 cars. See page 66I think you are right in TfL wanting a 5tph before further carriage extensions.
