I think 1 should be a 24 hour route, whilst N1 is renumbered as N5 to avoid confusion. Lastly renumbering the current N5 as N240 since it passes some of the 240 hotspots. If the N1 was to be renumbered, N180 would be a better fit from a local perspective, the N5 doesn’t really follow much of the 240 Your right but 240 starts at Edgware and ends at Golders Green and also could potentially extend to Hampstead Heath. Furthermore, the current N5 starts at Edgware and goes past Golders Green so that’s why I’ve suggested it to be given that number

Better to have the N1 as N188 instead (I know they have different routings in Bermondsey but still) with the 1 becoming 24 hours and the 188 now daily I think that would work and would be one of the least messy options. The only real snag is North Greenwich, which I believe should be served and then the N188 can follow the 161's line of route towards Woolwich. Some people on Greenwich Road will be inconvenienced but is lesser than the N188 not serving North Greenwich IMO. The other option is to have the N188 to Thamesmead replacing the N1 fully and the new N1 extended to North Greenwich, but I believe that would be superfluous eastbound past Surrey Quays. Instead I would like to see the N188 be every 20 minutes on weekends and the 24 hour 1 can focus on the crowds travelling primarily between Camden and inner south-east London at night.

I agree, i think routes that cross the river should always be 24 hours but routes from Greater London that terminate just edging Central London or a nearby terminus should be night routes. Examples such as the 1/88 as 24 hour routes, but the N155 that goes up to Aldwych. Or the N136 for example with the 36 as 24 hours

N143: running between Camden and Brent Cross via route 214 to Highgate Village and 143 to Brent Cross to maintain links lost by the 214. 214: withdrawn between Parliament Hill Fields and Highgate Village. 263: converted to 24 hours. N271: withdrawn between Highgate Village and North Finchley. Diverted to Brent Cross via 210. To connect Archway and Golders Green at night.
See withdrawn thread to see plan for day routes.

Surely, deciding what should be 24 hours & what should be a prefixed N route should be based on a number of different factors and not a rule regarding what crosses the river vs what comes from Greater London and edges Central London?

To be honest whenever I've driven the 1 on a late duty, the section from central London going up to Hampstead Heath hardly carries anyone late at night so I don't know if there would be enough demand for that.

It was just a suggestion, I agree with factors of course. I just put my own suggestion for the N1.
