I have a slightly off-topic query. Is it known why trains tunnels couldn't have been constructed for trains to continue on to Terminal 5 after serving Terminal 4? (then making Terminal 5 part of the the extended loop) Because Terminal 5 had not been contemplated when the tunnels were planned. Yes but new tunnels could have been created merging from the existing terminal 4 loop to terminal 5 in the same way new tunnels have been created between the Kennington loop and Battersea.

Don't know but probably down to cost.

Given the size of Heathrow Airport I don't think it'd be entirely practical for anyone wanting Central to have to spend 15-20 minutes going via Terminals 4 & 5 first. The introduction of the line to Terminal 5 introduced direct trains from Hatton Cross to Heathrow Central; the only inter-terminal link not to have a direct service is T4 - T5 which is well covered by the 482 and 490.
