The "Bus News 29/02/20" e-bulletin on the LondonsTransport Google Group leads with a very interesting article, setting out National Express Group's industry-leading commitment to zero-emission vehicles. The article states that the very last diesel-fuel bus has already been delivered to National Express West Midlands and there will be no more. The aim is for the bus fleet to be 100% zero-emission by 2030 and there is also an ambitious target to have the coach fleet zero-emission by 2035. The announcement was made in the same week as the first of 20 BYD/ADL Enviro400EVs was delivered to Yardley Wood Depot.
"The National Express Group announced in their year-end financial statement that they were delivering a bold
agenda for environmental leadership and that the company was to make a significant industry-leading commitment
to accelerate the shift to zero emission vehicles.
National Express Group will not buy another diesel bus in the UK.
National Express Group will lead the transition to zero emission coaches, with a target for the first electric coaches
in service in 2021.
National Express Group will set ambitions for the UK bus and UK coach businesses to be zero emission by 2030
and 2035, respectively.
This new vision follows the company’s sustained investment in Euro VI vehicles, way ahead of Clean Air Zone and
Ultra Low Emission Zone requirements. National Express Group has also been one of the first transport
companies to adopt the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s methodology for setting its carbon reduction
targets.
National Express Group recognises the importance of operators playing their role in delivering public policy
ambitions. The recent government announcement of a £5 billion bus fund, the pro-public transport policies of the
Mayor of the West Midlands and the ambitious vision set out in the draft Birmingham Transport Plan all show there
is a desire for leadership and change. National Express Group is determined to be part of that change and to
demonstrate that leadership.
National Express Group will shortly launch a procurement competition to choose the manufacturers and partners
to help achieve these ambitions.
This year National Express will:
■ Place a major order for electric buses to add to the first zero emission vehicles which will shortly enter service in the West Midlands.
■ Hold an in-service trial of an electric coach on the Stansted Airport service.
■ Select partners to develop a zero emission vehicle suitable for all long distance coach routes.
This news concerning zero emissions, comes as the first BYD / Alexander Dennis electric bus was delivered to National Express this week, for service at Yardley Wood depot."
