Sainsbury's are already following suit, Home Bargains, Morrisons, Waitrose (both Waitrose and John Lewis), M&S have already confirmed they will not be opening boxing day Well it seems that Christmas now begins in mid September........... apparently The Range in Crawley have already got a Christmas tree up! I've been told the West End will start its Xmas lights installation this week. It barely scares thinking about to see Xmas lights up during any possible belated heatwaves.

Xmas lights before November is bizarre. Even then I wouldn't bother about thinking about Christmas until December

It is not practical to expect businesses to just promote Christmas in December! Most people start buying bit earlier otherwise it just wouldn't work if everyone waited until December. In recent time the build up as always started around mid to late October with adverts etc.

Even then I wouldn't bother about thinking about Christmas until December Some town centres leave their Christmas lights up all year round, remember Sutton council left theirs up at Wallington at one point. I suspect they might go up early this year in case the winter problems with Covid become reality and they don't have the staff to install them. Supermarkets and I guess many other places prepare for Christmas all year around, logistics around what new lines to sell, which stock to discard to make room, promotions and advertisements, a lot goes into it - stock usually comes in around end of August/beginning of September as well with the rets filtering in from now until December.

I get that it isn't practical to wait until December but I do think the TV adverts start too early

What do people think of the announcements the government made last night?
I feel that this 'Plan B' is a betrayal of what the government set out in their roadmap in the spring. It feels like if he does implement Plan B we're just going round in circles again with all the restrictions. Of course it's sensible to implement some light restrictions like mask wearing if the virus starts to get out of control but I think the focus should be on vaccination and not restrictions.

As I understand it Plan B would be face coverings becoming compulsory again in certain places and people urged to generally act more cautiously and possible vaccine passports for mass events. I'm sure nobody wants any of those things but it's vastly preferable to further lockdowns.

The government made a mess of the announcement IMO. The NHS is already saying how close they are to being overwhelmed and we not even into Winter yet! The flu season is predicted to be bad this year because people are out and about and face coverings are not being used like last year. If the government plans to bring back restrictions they will find it very to hard to enforce you only to have to look at shops where face coverings are voluntary. People have lost trust with them even the Plan a and b gives two messages. As for the vaccine we are pretty much done and moved onto booster jabs for the over 50s and first jab for 12 to 15 year old.

They always make a mess of announcements like these. Just last Saturday vaccine passports were going to be implemented and now they're not! It's like you hear different things every day from them. As for the vaccine passports, there's two sides to the argument. They will probably help prevent the NHS becoming overwhelmed but at the same time it's still a restriction and people are going to protest/have illegal parties, so it sometimes feels hardly worthwhile. The government should rule out another lockdown, it will just damage the economy and the UK's economy can't handle another one. I'm pretty sure I heard Sajid Javid say just a few days ago that there won't be another lockdown but now they're not ruling it out. Locking down just curtails the virus in the short term, it isn't really successful or effective if we're repeatedly locking down, and an in/out approach isn't right as we have vaccination now.

I don't think anybody can rule anything out as far as covid is concerned and a lot of people seem almost resigned to it getting worse over the winter months.

Granted, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again the NHS needs an independent audit from the top down across all four nations and in every hospital to see where the inefficiencies are as part of a long term program to overhaul it to a modern 21st century system that is held accountable annually to every penny it spends. The problem is no government would ever do it because they are all terrified of what the public and opposition would think.

Also think there needs to be some perspective on things, whilst there were 45k more than average deaths last winter, the 2017-18 winter, the last bad flu season saw 25k more than average deaths.
