I agree with you that the evidence is it seems to be mild but we must also remember that South Africa has a younger population than the UK so it could work completely different - not asking for lockdown or restrictions btw. A variant doesn’t have to be deadly to overwhelm the NHS - this variant seems to be a disruptor where it infects ridiculously quick causing a swell in demand of the surface whilst also causing staff to isolate too. As for planning for it, the NHS is usually overwhelmed in this period even pre Covid so having this on top is going to hard to pre plan for. As I said just now, if hospitals are going to be that overwhelmed why are the Nightengale hospitals still closed? One of the contributing factors is the sheer numbers of staff who are off sick, or who have to self-isolate even if not ill. No point in opening up Nightingale hospitals if you haven't got enough staff for your regular ones.

No point in opening up Nightingale hospitals if you haven't got enough staff for your regular ones. The Nightingale Hospitals are just to show the Government is trying to do something. The original one that opened saw less than a few hundred patients, and mostly stood empty. This is a great diversion for Boris from any scandals, falling ratings in the polls, economy on verge of collapse due to absence etc... The one at St George's Tooting will need staff from somewhere, but most are isolated and unless you start drawing nurses away from other hospitals, you're just creating a problem somewhere else. But of course BoJo thought this through already At least there hasn't been another lockdown. Broke the monotony yesterday by taking the family to see the lights on Regent Street / Bond Street before driving around Mayfair and Chelsea. Grabbed a Nandos but the Gloucester Road branch was terrible, 50 minute wait despite upstairs section being as full as Spurs trophy cabinet... then they lost our £55 order all this due to Covid and ordering via a QR code stuck on the table. Cue some "middle class swearing" (saying service was unacceptable) and flustered manager got our meal and free desert Perhaps mid winter adds to the gloom, as well as Omicron never being too far away. But hopefully having had it this week, it will leave us alone. Work will be interesting this week, as most will be working from home. All Xbox and PS5 consoles have disappeared from the shops quicker than EN38 from the 318 of late, managed to bag one online instead. It's to help pass the time. At least Spurs can be more successful in a game of Fifa 22

Be careful, your forgetting that the government on here are perfect and aren’t allowed to be criticised

I have no trust in the government at the moment! Boris is taking a big gamble and we are all part of his bet. I am dreading work this week! 3000 plus students and 300 staff is not a nice prospect after all the Christmas mixing and extremely high infection rate.

We seem to be doing a lot better than most of mainland Europe and arguably better than Wales and Scotland too.

I have think the lateral flow tests has to be the biggest failure so far imo. It has been open to so much abuse and their accuracy also has to be put into question. I really do not know why there has now been such high usage of this over the PCR test which is more reliable. There has been a lot of people over the past few weeks getting time off work for lateral flow tests of a positive test being shared by photo etc and people getting time off work. Especially in some jobs where people could not get the time off during Christmas; plus they would get full pay. I do not see the rush for them, during the summer and up until early November the lateral flow tests where handed out in so much places, including stations. I am surprised people still need so much.

Be careful, your forgetting that the government on here are perfect and aren’t allowed to be criticised Of course, how dare he criticise the government. He should be punished and put in stocks on Tower Hill. That is treason at the highest level. Boris is the best prime minister this country has had and will ever have. This country would be like a fish without water without Boris.

Clearly that's down to Boris. To compound that there is emergency engineering work at Slade Green this morning, again totally Boris's fault. But worst of all Manchester United lost at home yesterday, Ole GS got sacked because of their poor form this season when clearly it was Boris to blame. I can only hope he'll be held to account at prime ministers question time😳.

As soon as people hear the word shortage they just pick them up! I bet people have box loads at home but just get more! Seen it reported they are being sold on line by people trying to make a quick buck.

I have seen them being sold online and worst, people sending them abroad to other countries. It was only a matter of time before it was abused. I remember at one station I saw staff left boxes of them there after they could not give out all of them, this was during the summer.
