I saw a leaflet from 1987 when OPO was introduced on the 253 and it said the service structure was Euston to Mile end Gate and Mornington Crescent (Holloway between the peaks) and Aldgate. It said this structure would also be introduced on Saturdays and after the early morning on Sundays. Mornington Crescent to Mile end was quite a bigger overlap then what late came and formalised as the 254 later on. Must have been a very busy service to need that.

At one point before it was split into the 253 and 254, the overlapping section of the 253 was London's most frequent bus service with intervals of 1-2 minutes at peak times.

Wow. I didnt realise it had got that frequent. Must have been the solo section through Stamford Hill that really generated the loads. Not only was there the overlap between Holloway and Manor House but also the 29 overlapping between Manor house and Camden town aswell and 5bph on the 279 between MH and Holloway. Must have been a massively and intensively busy section around 1999-2003.

Surely Warren Street rather than Euston? The 253 was still running to Warren Street via Hampstead Road in 1987. It was cut back to Mornington Crescent in 1991 then extended to Euston via Eversholt Street in 1992.

That was the route structure well before that too - in the long hot summers of 1975 and 1976 when I worked for Camden Council and had to visit GLC housing offices at Mornington Crescent and spent a little of lunchtime in the scrubby 'garden' opposite on a bench trying to get cool. There was always one 253 on stand, often two, and sometimes three. They weren't all going to Aldgate by any means, but the other buses coming through from the Post Office Tower terminus were usually bound for Mile End Gate, and never Aldgate.

To act as relief for the 220 and to link the Wetland Centre with Hammersmith (The link has been broken since the closure of Hamming Bridge) There are issues with DDs on the 378 not least than when passing under the Hounslow Loop at Barnes Bridge they'd have to swerve to the middle of the road to avoid hitting the bridge, this is easier at night when there's less traffic around for the N22. george is local so he'll know more about it than me.

I do wonder if that bridge would have always rendered the 209 to be Single deck even if the bridge ever got restored to be able to take Double deck buses.

I would like to see the 9 cross Hammersmith Bridge again not that I remember it the first time 😁. I know the new bridge won't take double deckers.
