Just read elsewhere the the Cable Car has failed to find a new sponsor so this will be a further drain on TfL finances once the current deal runs out. Mothball it. I don't think it serves any real purpose to the everyday londoner for commuting. Similar to the 15H.

I don't think it serves any real purpose to the everyday londoner for commuting. Similar to the 15H. Even if mothballed it would still need maintenance and staff to test it regularly to ensure it was still in working condition, so it would cost even more without revenue coming in. The only viable solution would be to take a one time hit to dismantle it and make some money back selling it to a theme park or another city.

Link to article regarding the cable car sponsorship.
Boris Johnson’s Emirates Air Line cable car fails to find new sponsor
I had to laugh at the bit about the storm!
According to a well-placed source, senior TfL executives messaged last week: “Storm Eunice was our last hope.” Unfortunately for TfL, while the high winds tore a hole in the nearby Millennium Dome, the cable car was left unscathed.

With Cable Car, with the City Hall moving to the Crystal Building and the North Greenwich having it's rebrand to the Design District and the O2 turning into a shopping centre nowadays as well as an entertainment venue hopefully that will help it's fortunes. Always thought the issue was that the prices of the cable car are too high should of been incorporated with the travelcard and it's prices in line with the Zone 2/3 train/underground prices. Oyster top up machines should be available as well. I also feel like it's location doesn't help as at the time there was nothing much on the Royal Docks side apart from the Excel Centre, sounds nice linking the O2 and Excel on paper however especially with the Excel apart from event times it's a quiet area. Yes there is more developments now in North Greenwich and the Royal Docks which suggests it may of been ahead of it's time, but this could have been built much later to coincide with plans which were known at the time. There is also the Jubliee line, Blackwall Tunnel and 108 (if that counts) that links North Greenwich to East London, which are cheaper, more accessible and serve busier parts of East London too, maybe a different location where a crossing is actually needed would have helped, this is not even to add the Silvertown Tunnel (if that is ever built). Finally, the fact that this is London's only Cable Car and they still didn't market it well sums it up as there was potential but wasn't pushed in the right way. Now it just sits as a white elephant that tfl spent £60 million on reportedly. Rant over

Has or is this issue due to being resolved soon with the funding deal agreed by the government?

Not sure how but there were 30/40+ people waiting.

I agree that Royal Victoria is an awkward place to end up in even with the DLR around the corner (quite a walk to 147/241/474) however it's certainly still used by a lot of people

I wonder if a new sponsor has been found?

It's become really popular all over TikTok which probably explains the crowds as of late.

In that case the crowds will move onto the next big thing soon 😬 I do think they're here to stay, a lot of places that become popular through TikTok tend to remain popular due to the way the algorithm works where it brings up things after a while.

I was there at royal Victoria on Monday and shock! Horror! There was a long queue to board the dangleway. Not sure how but there were 30/40+ people waiting. I agree that Royal Victoria is an awkward place to end up in even with the DLR around the corner (quite a walk to 147/241/474) however it's certainly still used by a lot of people I think there was a missed opportunity with the cable car to go to the opposite side of the Greenwich Peninsula instead. Rather than the Royal Docks where there are fewer attractions, a link across to Canary Wharf would have been far more useful. Like North Greenwich, Canary Wharf is another area increasing in popularity, beyond just office workers - lots of new apartment developments, shops, restaurants etc. The Cable Car terminal could have been within the Wood Wharf development too. Yes there is the Jubilee Line, but then passengers can also currently use it as an alternative to the actual cable car route, changing at Canning Town. Canary Wharf could have increased usage of the air-line over the current journey patterns to the Royal Docks. Clearly the cable car is more of a tourist attraction than a mode of transport, and tourist/day-trippers/etc are far more likely to spend time in Canary Wharf. Also note that many cable car systems elsewhere in the world do have intermediate stops (for example in Barcelona). I wonder if it could even be possible to extend the current Emirates Air Line route to continue across the peninsula and over the Thames again towards Wood Wharf?

From what I know they haven't found a sponsor and are putting signs up at the moment calling it "London Cable Car"
