The alternative would be to ignore social distancing requirements......... and that really would be madness. Does anyone remember seeing "Sykes and a bus?" Eric Sykes at the end walking his passengers. It's priceless if you've never seen it, check out Youtube. Walking Bus services could catch on, saving TfL thousands I fear for operators who have spent hundreds of thousands on new buses, ie routes 25, 270, 323 etc., who may be treating their new stock as glorified minibuses carrying 10 or 20 people. Is there any compensation for loss of fares? Still lots of confusion as some of the major long distance routes are still "free", like the 123... yet we are opening parks etc., I know we can't hide from this illness forever, but this is a massive overreaction. Perhaps TfL is mimicking Coronavirus by attacking itself after a dangerous policy has been allowed to invade and overwhelm it Rush hour will see people just pick an Uber as people will abandon buses, leading to further cuts of routes. Plus the hike in Congestion Charge, the incoming ULEZ next year, is making working anx travelling in London really unattractive. Well done, The Bus Driver's Son. Enjoy your police protection and luxury cars, pal [/quote] It's unfair to lay this at Sadiq Khan's door. The extremely restricted passenger numbers and "essential travel only, socially distanced" messages apply to all operators nationwide, and are mandated by the UK Government who are also making funding available to cover the financial shortfall. And if Sadiq Khan has received direct threats to his personal safety (which is quite likely, since he is a left-wing politician and a non-white muslim, all of which would make him a hate figure for the far right) the police has a duty of care towards him.

I mean do people expect TfL and the mayor to totally ignore social distancing?

Will be impossible to police - drivers to use discretion for example if already 18 onboard and a family of 4 wish to board. I know for a fact this will not work in my part of east London. I look forward to being told off again after my early post! you are right not just East London it won't Work anywhere in London, me and my colleagues have been picking more then 20 Passengers for the last few weeks you simply can't police it, anyone says otherwise is simply not being honest, it's impossible.

I totally agree with both of you. It is not up to drivers to police this, it is up to passengers to take their own responsibility, and not board a bus if they think it has too many people on for their own safety, or to get off the bus if it starts to become that way. EnsignBus are being quite explicit about this; in fact they are instructing their drivers that they do NOT refuse travel on the grounds that social distancing capacity (which is only advisory anyway) has been reached.

That seems the best way of doing it..........it's about time some people started taking some responsibility ........ and you can bet those who ignore social distancing will be the first to complain when another wave of covid hits us.
