We are starting to see more and more of these new camera mirrors on various new buses. Do you prefer the new mirrors or the normal conventional mirrors?

Cameras any day - the visabillity is miles improved. Less wear and tear too compared to normal mirrors and also the benefit of improved fuel consumption. It's a big yes from me to camera mirrors. Hoping a retrofit solution can be developed soon.

We don't have them here where I live - yet, but the camera mirrors I'm starting to like. I'll admit, I was sceptical at first of the concept but after hearing how well it works, how it's an improvement over its standard counterpart and how there hasn't been any negative feedback about it yet, my views have changed and I do look forward to them being rolled out on buses in my area.

I was also initially a sceptic because these things are a bit of a culture shock at first and take a bit of getting used to but I think the camera mirrors are better overall. They're less likely to be broken too as the standard mirrors can hit things and break. I think you and I both have the similar frustration of never getting mirrorless buses in our local areas as the YX20O** batch are only ever on the 482.

One big advantage of old style mirrors were , if they fitted through a gap the rest of the bus would, similirly the origonal indicators on the rM served the same dual purpose

My only experience of camera mirrors is my short time out at the wheel of BYD/ADL demo LJ68CYO. That was a double culture shock - getting used to both the camera mirrors and the electric drive! You have to get used to looking at the right place on the nearside and trusting them to be right, which sounds a bit stupid but as a bus driver you get so used to ignoring CCTV screens while driving. I've still yet to be convinced - after driving the demo I got back in one of our buses and thought 'yes, this is better', but given more time with them I think I could be converted. Driving at night or in the rain seems to be the real plus side of the camera mirrors with the better image quality.

Camera mirrors look much nicer externally and they also solve the problem of mismatched or incorrect mirrors being fitted to buses following damage, which can give them a weird “look”.

Camera mirrors, it’s the way forward and technology will only improve moving forwards

I still prefer conventional mirrors, I find the placement for the nearside monitor in the middle of the windscreen silly as drivers we are so used to looking over to the left.

That is specifically what I don't like about the new mirrors, it being harder to look through the virtual mirrors and check the front nearside of the bus at the exact same time. There's also the element of drivers adjusting back and forth between mirror types whenever an older bus is on routes like the 197 and 270, not to mention readjustments between those buses and one's car. In all fairness it would be interesting to have a go on one of those buses to confirm my opinions of them. Who knows I might think differently afterwards...but I doubt it.

I don't like the fact that you can't actually adjust the mirror position either it's set as it is.

I prefer Normal mirrors as ik this may not happen but there could be a delay between what the camera sees and what the screen shows you and that wont be ideal and its also a bit weird for drivers to look up rather than look left/right when turning/pulling out
