Whilst it think it was canteen talk as I believe tfl set the spec for the tender (maybe tfl were asking for prices for that as an option to who knows) I do wonder if swapping the 5 and EL2 may be a better option. The demand on the Romford section is probably more in line with the EL2s freq and it would provide a new link from Barking riverside to Romford.

The 5 is slightly weird as the loads coming out of Romford are always really healthy and this crowd stays on until past Becontree Heath, however going into Romford is always quieter. I would imagine the EL2 should be able to manage however there are likely to be a huge amount of people changing at Becontree Heath for the 5, with the current EL2 you don't often have many people getting off the 5 for an EL2. The EL2 itself seems to operate as two sections, the Barking to Dagenham Dock section and the Barking to Becontree Heath section.

There's no link between Barking town Centre and Dagenham town Centre, closest is the 145. Like to see the EL2 turn off Wood Lane at Heathway and terminate at Dagenham Asda.

This made me laugh, not because of the suggestion itself but because of the route it'd be. I've included a quick mock up of it below Clicky Click for image
Probably would easily take the prize for most indirect route, would basically terminate at Dagenham Dock in both directions Bouncing of what others have said, there's no real need for one. The 287 and 5 both pass Heathway and the 145 isn't far too. The District Line costs the same price as a single bus journey off peak and can easily be done through changes such as 173/175>5, 145>62, 173/174/175>287 and plenty more.

There is a bus route from Manchester to Burnley, run by Transdev, which is marketed as The Witch Way.

Neither 5 nor 86. It’s the Old Witch in central London which is the busiest!

It's the sort of thing he'd know. Mind you, in terms of transport he mainly talks about trains.
