consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/strand-bus-stop-changes/Closes 5 Nov 2020 Opened 24 Sep 2020 Overview We need to re-route buses in the Strand and Aldwych area as a result of Westminster City Council, (WCC) plans for the area. You can see the plans for the area on their website. The following buses will be re-routed as follows; • N/1, 59, N/68, 168, 188, 243, 521 and X68 via Aldwych west arm towards Waterloo • N/26, 76, 172 and 341 via Aldwych east and west arms towards Waterloo • 6, N/9, N/87, N44 and N155 to stand at new stands on Aldwych, east side and Melbourne Place and run via Melbourne Place and Aldwych west arm • N/11, N/15, N21, N26, N89, N199, N550 and N551 via Aldwych east and west arms towards Trafalgar Square • N/91 via Kingsway and Strand via Aldwych western arm towards Trafalgar Square Routes 139, 176, and N343 would continue to run between Lancaster Place and Strand in both directions. Buses that previously stopped on The Strand would now stop at new location on Aldwych, where possible, bus routes going in the same direction (such as east to Fleet Street) will serve the same stop.

No mention of the 172 that also currently stands with the 6, 9 and 87.

Another awful scheme - convenient how it's suddenly turned up during the Covid pandemic where currently, roads in Central London are quiet whilst many other projects was postponed. I wouldn't be surprised if the High Commission of Australia building decide to object

Terrible scheme again. Surprised tfl didnt use it to their advantage aswell to remove a route ie the 6 cut to Cockspur Street.
Sending all the traffic around the north side will just add to every journey throu it

The text is slightly misleading about the N343, implying that it won't be rerouted. Buses towards New Cross Gate currently loop round the one-way system serving two stops. With these changes the N343 will have to be rerouted to turn directly into Lancaster Place (like the 139 and 176 do). Not a big deal but it should be mentioned.

N343 routeing is quite an anomaly then. At least it creates consistency in relation to buses from Charing Cross to Elephant.

No mention of the 172 that also currently stands with the 6, 9 and 87. Aldwych was always a weird place for it to terminate. Better than nothing in that it still goes over Waterloo Bridge but a waste of capacity over the bridge as it stops short of a meaningful traffic objective. Ideally would be extended to Trafalgar Square or Holborn or even beyond. However I would worry this will just be an excuse to cut it back to Waterloo or Elephant.

Having looked at the consultation information the 172 will still serve the eastern arm of Aldwych but won’t stop at the same stop as the 26, 76 and 341 towards Waterloo. The first common stop for those routes will be on the western arm of Aldwych. I have suggested the 172 be extended to Holborn where there is terminal space where the 171 used to stand. That would make better use of the capacity provided by the 172 over Waterloo Bridge and help social distancing.

TfL have published the consultation results 19th August 2021 Results updated 19 Aug 2021 We are now able to publish the consultation report and our response to the key issues raised around the bus stop locations, the report can be found below. Strand and Aldwych bus changes consultation report (PDF 525KB) We are aware that the new location of bus stops will impact on some passenger journeys and we have mitigated these where possible. There will also be people who benefit from shorter walks to bus stops as a result of the changes. The works on the Strand and in the surrounding areas are well underway. We are reacting to the changes by re-routing and changing bus stop locations. Dates for these changes are dependent on the wider works taking place. We will monitor the impact of the changes on passenger journeys and keep under review bus stop locations and buses serving the stops. If you have any questions about the consultation please contact us at: consultations@tfl.gov.uk. consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/strand-bus-stop-changes/user_uploads/strand-aldwych-bus-changes-consultation-report.pdfJust 2 days later, today, they are making changes to following Aldwych changes - 21 August 2021 Routes Affected: 1, 6, 9, 11, 15, 26, 59, 68, 76, 87, 91, 168, 172, 188, 243, 341, 521, N1, N9, N11, N15, N21, N44, N68, N87, N89, N91, N155, N171, N199, N343, N550, N551 and X68. I rode around Aldwych today and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that the new layout actully works pretty well, dare I even say it is posisbly better for the Kingsway routes southbound to save a minute or two compared with going right the way round like before.
Using the loop involving Melbourne Place to stand the 6/9/87 is very good. Melbourne place is probably just big enough for the three routes. Not sure where the 172 stands though?
Also stops on Aldwych are split between towards Waterloo and towards Trafalgar Square giving a goos spacing of passengers and not massive ques of buses trying to pull in and block the road.
