Did anyone on here ever ride on it? I was unfortunately too young to have ever ridden on it when it was replaced by the comparatively shorter N89 and it had long been withdrawn from Medway years before that point.

Sadly nope but I remember it from my bus maps as a kid - I’d of love to have rode the Victoria to Gillingham through journeys either on a NV or T.

I think i saw a pic of a PVL on the N82 at Gillingham that commercially replaced the N81 beyond Bexleyheath.

I wonder why in 1999 tfl pulled it back to Bexleyheath when it had previous had a regular service to Crayford. Especially as to this day its left Crayford without a night service.

Check 'In Armstrongs bus route' page, look under 'Night routes' Unfortunately Ian's site does not include the purely commercial routes N60/N80/N82 (although he does include the earlier NX1 which was London Central's first night bus into Medway).
When the N81 was cut back to Bexleyheath the Medway service was effectively operated as an extension of London Central's N60, a commercial route which had been running between London and St Albans. The N60 was cut back to Watford but extended at the other end to Gravesend, with one journey further extended to Gillingham. However this service actually ran under three different route numbers: N60 between Watford and Central London, N80 between Central London and Gravesend, and N82 between Gravesend and Gillingham. Presumably this was to allow operation under domestic rules for driver hours.
Not sure of the exact route taken by the N80 within London - possibly similar to N81 but via Old Kent Road instead of Camberwell? It was limited-stop within London anyway. The N60 was withdrawn in 2001; the N80/N82 were withdrawn in 2002.

A great shame as I would be able to make use of it now. I wish the 96 ran all night.

I know it's out of London but always thought Dartford should have a Night link to London , what has always amazed me though is how Kent commuter towns have always had Bus/Coach Links to London for example now with the King's Ferry commuter routes etc where as Essex as of now doesn't really have any we used to have the citySaver and GreenLine both too Southend Via Basildon which then joined forces in around 2000 then gave up and was operated by Stephenson's but then they gave up in about 2006 as for Night bus links Ensign started that Southend Airport express route then covid happened doubt that will be back .

Increasing traffic (often causing unreliability) and improvements to the parallel rail services killed off most of these coach services. The Ensignbus Southend Airport was aimed at travellers with early departures and late arrivals, that were not catered for by the rail link. Since then a 04.30 departure from Liverpool Street and a 23.59 departure from Southend Airport have been added to the timetable.

Used it loads of times in the mid-90s. Seemed to have decent numbers travelling out into Kent (from listening to people asking for fares from the driver - I was always off at Sun in the Sands), especially from the New Cross Venue, which was coming into its own around those days. Long time ago, of course, and the travelling landscape has completely changed since then, although the Venue is still going strong (or at least was pre-pandemic...).
Going back further, caught the NX1 from town (outside Canada House on Trafalgar Square, of course) occasionally when it started stopping at Sun in the Sands - a handy way of avoiding the crowds, which is probably why it didn't last... (edit: this would have been the N80 rather than the NX1!)
