Hackney Central Station is to gain a new southern entrance, off Graham Road. This will complement the existing entrance on the north side of the station which gets severely overcrowded at peak times and where the cycle parking is inadequate to meet demand. The new entrance will have five ticket barriers plus one wider gate, two ticket machines, cycle parking and space for a coffee stall, and will give direct access to the westbound platform 1. Because of the constraints of the site, access to the platform will be by stairs only, prioritising capacity over accessibility. The existing entrance is fully accessible as is the footbridge. The Department for Transport has granted an exemption for this. The £3.2 million cost of the scheme is being met by Network Rail's Accelerated Enhancement Fund, although the work will be carried out by TfL. Work will commence in the New Year and the new entrance is expected to open in late 2021.
