Westminster City Council has agreed to bring forward an £18 million scheme to remove traffic from part of Strand. The road would be closed to all traffic (except cycles) between Surrey Street and Lancaster Place (the approach road to Waterloo Bridge). This would create a traffic-free pedestrian area in front of King's College and Somerset House and around St Mary le Strand Church. Traffic would be diverted around Aldwych which would become a two-way road.
A short section of Strand, between Arundel Place and Surrey Street, would remain open to buses, taxis and access, with vehicles exiting towards Aldwych via Melbourne Street. This would allow bus routes which currently terminate at Aldwych to continue doing so.
Temporary measures could allow traffic to be removed as early as August 2021, this will also allow the scheme's design to be trialled before being made permanent.
