I’m a little late to the party on this franchising of bus services by TfGM in Manchester, I know they’re doing it, and understandably Stagecoach aren’t too happy about it, but not too clued up other than that. I go to Manchester quite a lot as my best friend moved up there for uni and subsequently settled there permanently, and lives on the very famous 192 bus route. When is the 192 going to be incorporated into the franchising? And how long will the contracts be before being renewed again? Can’t wait to see this unfold and if Stagecoach get to keep Manchester’s most prized and famous bus route! If I recall rightly, the 192 will be in the third and final tranche. Somewhere in this thread I am sure there are dates.

The north east Manchester results were a few months ago due late June so should be imminent.

thank you guys The only new buses reported are 50 BYD double decks and 60 Enviro 200 MMCs. Go-Ahead are due to use some current buses with Diamond North West at Bolton and source others. In particular, I believe Arriva and Stagecoach are not selling any current buses at Bolton and Wigan to TfGM.

Maybe that explains why they are moving their best vehicles to Wigan and Bolton.

But Go Ahead is still picking up more than it’s losing. I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict First may win the remaining large franchises in the centre and south in early 2024. Can’t believe Diamond has won 8 small franchises now.

Diamond's Oldham services are two routes composed of 6 vehicles in total and will run from Eccles.
EDIT: according to a post on railforums "Rotala have ordered a further 7 x ADL E200MMC's (11.8m) to be numbered 30685-30691"

Rotala already has seven small franchises in the first round of tendering (Bolton/Wigan).

MEN's understanding is that Go North West was focused on retaining Queens Road and did not bid for Middleton, which Stagecoach will retain, or Oldham which Stagecoach will acquire from First. Nearly 950 staff will transfer from Queens Road and Oldham to Stagecoach Manchester and the management has pledged to work with their current employers to ensure a smooth transition.

Rotala is overhauling its management structure at its Diamond Bus North West and Preston Bus subsidiaries. A new Managing Director will oversee both DBNW's transition into the Greater Manchester franchise environment, as well as pursuing growth opportunities in Lancashire through Preston Bus. DBNW will also have a General Manager who will act as a key lead for the Greater Manchester business and oversee service delivery to ensure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are met, and Franchise Managers to oversee specific routes and ensure that expectations of service delivery and customer satisfaction are met. Despite the loss of much of its current Greater Manchester work in Bolton and Wigan from September, DBNW has been successful in winning a number of smaller contracts in both rounds of tendering and are hopeful of winning more in the third and final round which should be announced in March 2024. www.route-one.net/news/rotala-reshuffles-management-at-north-west-businesses/

They are only up one garage of work having won Bolton and Wigan but lost Queens Road. What I am sceptical about though is that buying all the garages and leasing them along with the new vehicles is the best way to take control of the network as well as brokering the sale between operators. It does just make the network a playground for the bigger operators, as evidenced by the fact that only the big four in Greater Manchester have won a franchise in the first two rounds with the small operators losing their work and Arriva too. Rotala (Diamond Bus North West) have won some smaller contracts (around 70 vehicles-worth of work) and they aren't one of the "Big Four". There is a thread dedicated to Manchester franchising; perhaps it would be better to direct discussion of the detail there. tangytango.proboards.com/thread/11875/manchester-introduce-london-style-franchisingBy big 4, I meant the 4 (presently) bigger companies in Greater Manchester (GNW, Stagecoach, First and Diamond) They are only up one garage of work having won Bolton and Wigan but lost Queens Road. What I am sceptical about though is that buying all the garages and leasing them along with the new vehicles is the best way to take control of the network as well as brokering the sale between operators. OK, seemingly doubling your size isn't considered a success. Visions were awarded some home to school contracts along with Stagecoàch I believe, announced between the first two big announcements I am not denying that it isn’t a success. I did forget about the school bus announcements however.

Transport for Greater Manchester has presented an ambitious Bus Strategy to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Bee Network Committee. The highlight of the plan is a target of 50 million bus journeys a year by 2030, which represents a 30% increase on current levels. TfGM wants to increase accessibility, and will make 500 more bus stops accessible with 300 stops having real-time information. The new electric double-deckers which will start to be rolled out in Bolton and Wigan will have two wheelchair spaces, hearing induction loops, audio and visual announcements and anti-slip flooring. TfGM aims to have buses at a minimum 12-minute frequency on key radial and orbital routes. The other aim is to provide 90% of Greater Manchester's population with a bus or Tramlink service at least every 30 minutes within 400m of their home. www.route-one.net/news/manchester-presents-strategy-to-boost-bus-patronage-by-30/
