The National Federation of Women's Institutes (the "WI") has launched a new report which aims to understand the impact of bus cuts on people in rural areas, especially women. The report states that 46% of respondents felt their access to basic services had been impacted negatively by cuts to rural bus services, and 19% reported an adverse effect on their mental health. A New Route For Bus Services is part of the WI's "Get On Board" campaign, which calls on the Government and local authorities to increase subsidies and work in partnership with bus companies and community transport operators to enable an adequate provision of services. They have also created a template letter for WI members to write to or email their Local Transport Authority and ask them to them to support the WI's recommendations and implement them in their Bus Service Improvement Plans, which will need to be published by October 2021 (due to the upcoming local elections this template will be made available after 6th May). One of the main calls is for bus services to be more responsive to the needs of women. The report calls on the Government to ensure that women are more involved at the decision-making levels for public transport.
