www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/jun/22/tube-mobile-phone-network-2024-london-mayor-sadiq-khan - surprised this hasn't been mentioned but the mayor has announced that the entire tube network will have mobile phone coverage on trains and stations by 2024. Khan says it's being done to attract passengers back to the tube lost during the pandemic yet this won't fully rolled out by 2024 probably too late by then but a good step none the less given the New York Subway, Moscow network and the Hong Kong network both already have this with the latter having it for roughly 20 years.

I think wifi underground is a good idea, but less convinced about making phone calls underground. There is so much noise when tube travels down the tunnels if will be difficult to hold a call, and if you then start raising your voice or shouting so the other person can hear, you'll upset lots of other passengers. Making calls however will be good however if you are stuck in a tunnel running late, at least then you can people know. In terms of attracting passengers it won't make any real difference. Can you really see people say, I will take the tube because it has mobile coverage? There will be a few people no doubt, but not a meaningful number.

An update: mobile phone coverage will be extended to parts of the Northern and Central Lines this Summer (2023). Mobile phones can currently be used betwween Holland Park and Queensway on the Central Line, between Archway and Kentish Town on the Northern Line, and between Westminster and Canning Town on the Jubilee Line. The next stage will see coverage extended from Tottenham Court up to Golders Green and Highgate on the Northern Line, and between Oxford Circus and Bank on the Central Line. Experience from the Jubilee Line is that passengers use the signal to check messages and use social media, rather than engaging in loud conversations. London is behind other countries in offering mobile phone coverage in tunnels, although it is one of the first worldwide to start offering G5 coverage. The network is being provided by BAI Comunications at no cost to TfL - BAI makes its money by selling capacity to the mobile network operators. There is no news yet on when mobile phone coverage will be extended to the Elizabeth Line. www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/mobile-phone-coverage-expanding-on-the-northern-and-central-lines-63146/
