I don't think that Barnes Bridge can take double deckers. I like the idea though, but not sure that it will work. Express routes work better in outer London like the X26 and X140 but the X68 also operates like your 414. Not sure how reliable the X68 operates though. If it wasn't for the low bridge at Barnes Bridge I would say that the 414 could operate from Mortlake to Marble Arch to give it purpose and distinguish it from the 14 Deckers can pass Barnes Bridge but only through the centre meaning it is only feasible during the night according to members. I want to see the 378 scrapped as it is frankly useless yes take either the 22 or 414 and extend it slightly. Another proposal I see could work is scrapping the 209 instead of the 378, the 378 could get back to Mortlake and I would have the 414 make a loop serving Barnes Bridge Station and then that going to Castlenau. The only way you could effectively serve Barnes Bridge is by going underneath it and it's not feasible with a decker during the day due to traffic among other things. Personally, the best ways I see to deal with the 378 is either merge it into the 209 and have a Hammersmith Bridge to Putney Bridge route via Avondale Road double run or you merge both of those routes with the 485 to have a Wandsworth, Southside to Hammersmith Bridge via Wandsworth Riverside, Putney High Street, Avondale Road double run with the Wetlands double run transferred to the 419 although you lose the link to Putney Bridge Station as a result of the 2nd idea

I wonder if Hammersmith Bridge had not had any problems how long after 1992 the 9 would have been split to create a new Single decker route to go under Barnes Bridge. 2004 maybe? When the Routemasters were replaced.

The 378 doesn't even connect Mortlake to Putney Bridge now that it has been cut back to Barnes Pond, as vjaska said earlier. It will if the journey switches to a 209 or vice versa at journeys end according to the NMCC alert. I don’t know how many journeys are like this but I was under the impression the 209/378 formed a joint service and switch over at Mortlake so presumably it can’t affect many journeys.

Castlenau/Barnes do sound politically sensitive areas though due to the bridge situation.

No service at all from Mortlake Bus station now on the 378 including the crossovers.

Okay people thinking about the problems in regards to Barnes Bridge regarding double deckers...this can be easily solved by installing sensors in the bus where you place the traffic lights a little further back in the road and when the bus comes it will make the opposite direction stop 🛑 so the bus can pass safely under Barnes Bridge.
I lived in Barnes and Richmond Borough for a good 25 years of my life and my family still live there and the locals would love a express route to London rather than catching the 533 or changing at Barnes Pond for the 378 (485 not regular service pattern) this would reduce pressure on the 533, also the local train service from Barnes Station...workers would prefer to sit on a bus for a hour rather than change and change again....however TFL needs to make the service attractive to work say every 15 minutes would be beneficial and make it a true express route with no regulating......
To turn at Mortlake is quite easy just just at Mortlake High Street and Sheen Lane u turn at the roundabout and park on the left this is what Metroline used to do when drivers had a break and couldn’t be bothered to go back to Brentford

Many of these recent posts would have suited the Hammersmith Bridge closure thread.

Same with express routes - there’s little appetite for any running through Inner London (I’m aware Barnes is in an Outer London borough) bar ones the X68 which is a survivor of a bygone era - any new express routes that do come about are going to be concentrated towards the edge of London.

Your express route is the sort of innovate idea that you might get in a deregulated environment, TfL would rather people got a bus to Putney Bridge or Hammersmith and then the tube into Central London.

TfL Board papers for next weeks meeting have been published The Agenda shows a revised budget and plan is still being worked on (agenda items 9 and 10) and will be issued as late info for the Board meeting. I wonder if this will give hints as to what the direction or size of changes are going to be content.tfl.gov.uk/board-20210728-agenda-papers.pdf

This months TLB reports frequency reductions are planned on several central London routes on Saturday 28th August. Do we know the details yet ? The only ones I know for sure are the 507 and 521.

Would be interesting to see what other routes face reductions. My money would be on the 11 & 19.
