Now I'm asking this from an odd viewpoint being someone who isn't a rail enthusiast but everyone's accounts of what sparked their interest in buses got me thinking about the same question but about trains and whilst I can share the aspects of buses, I can't from a train standpoint so was interested to know what it is they like about it?

Are you asking about NR or LUL? if it's both for me it's got to be somthing in my childhood that kicked it off such as the old units that ran. And going to see family and friends on the 92,95,D and C stocks that have a special place in my heart. NR would be in the days of WAGAN and GNER and ONE Railway before National Express of wich I miss dearly.

I don't have a huge interest in trains, but I do like to look at the history of different companies, as well as the different types that are used/were formerly used from time to time.

For me it started with childhood rides on the Northern Line from the mid 70s during the transitional period of the 59 stock moving there from the Piccadilly Line...the Northern then operating with outgoing 38 stock, incoming 59 stock and new 72 stock. As a kid it was fun looking in the tunnel to see which version of train will approach, the tell-tale signs being the headlights...although the sounds of the motors are also a giveaway if heard beyond the noise of other echoing noise from within the tunnel. My favourite on the line were the 72 stock as they sounded very reminisant of the Warp engines from Kirk's Enterprise during the original 1966 to 1969 run of Star Trek (also sounded that way once in the 1979 movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture).
As we got older as kids my brother and i often use to stand on the footbridge which overlooks Morden Depot, by which time the 38 stock had departed. Our time there was essentially the tube version of us standing opposite Merton Garage watching the buses come in and out, sometimes waving at the drivers.
Overhead trains don't really spark my attention other than when the Intercity 125 first came out.

I don't have a huge interest in national rail, more into underground trains.
I guess it started when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I was with my mum and I was at the bridge overlooking the Metropolitan line on Wood Lane (Ruislip). I waved to the driver and he waved back. Since then, I've memorised all the stations on each tube line, the sides the doors open, and for most above ground stations, whether the train passes above or below the road.
My train obsession really rocketed around 2016 when I started riding to different parts of London that I had not rode to, taking particular interest in the Central line, even once going all the way from West Ruislip to Epping and back, enjoying a Domino's Pizza on the way. By that point I hadn't really taken much notice of buses apart from my local ones and perhaps a few others around Pinner and Uxbridge.
I don't usually travel outside London, so I don't notice much National Rail, apart from taking the GWR to see my grandparents before the pandemic. Nowadays I travel more by bike and bus so I don't really see that many trains unless they're above ground, so while I still like trains, I'm more into buses now.

Some of my earliest memories are of going to Swanley Station with my mum and nan on saturdays to see my great nan in St Mary Cray or going shopping in Bromley. I just loved them, and always have done.

..After working for a few bus companies part-time whilst at Uni I joined a rail company. Intended to stay there for a few years, still there almost 20 years.
Think the railway are now in my blood- I'm not big into unit numbers or standing on the end of platforms writing numbers down, but I'm certainly interested in the greater industry and the development of new fleets, new innovations.
I too love the operational side of things, my current role means I get quite heavily involved in operation manuals, rule books and generally getting to play around with units in depots

Having Kenley Station a 5 minute walk away from where I live, combined with an interest in sliding doors I had when I was very young (yes I was a strange toddler ), 455's in three different colour schemes in the early 2000's when Govia had just taken over the South Central franchise and regular trips into central Croydon by train sparked my interest in the railways. Fast forward 20 years and I'm now working for that very company on my placement year at uni.

I was interested in trains before buses. When I was 2, we moved to Wembley and our house backed onto the Metropolitan Line and was instantly interested as I watched the A-stock go by at the back of our garden every few minutes. My interest in trains now is more about travelling on them and watching the scenery, rather than knowing the different classes and taking down numbers. Having moved to Herts, my house has a good view of the WCML so sometimes enjoy the trains going by on that.

I grew up on the both the Central and District Lines seeing those D78 stock and the 1962/1992 stock passing through good ol East London. I did like the Misha Black moquette on the district line.

I only really started using trains when I was in my late teens, so it was a bit of a rarity for me and there was always that sense of excitement when going on a journey. Now that I work within the railway and I see trains for 9 hours a day, my interests in trains have decreased massively lol

Only really interested in trains for where they go and the travel experience, and in the case of LU/DLR the history of London Transport.
