Highways News has created a detailed article describing the methods by which the bus priority measures are being implemented and traffic light timing altered to let buses through One that I didn’t know existed is a new timetable data feed so it can spot late running buses and give them more green traffic lights. The minority of drivers who run deliberately slow to get a turn will now be finding fewer red traffic lights to waste time at. highways-news.com/extracting-more-value-out-of-tfls-bus-priority-system/

This is needed very much in Bromley. It’s crazy that I can do Westerham to Westmorland Road in 30 minutes or so but then take 15 minutes to get through Bromley and the 11 sets of traffic lights I have to sit through. The ones at the Elmfield Road/Kentish Way bus lane are particularly galling as they will stay red for buses for an interminable amount of time even in the middle of the night when there’s no traffic in sight on Kentish Way! And the next set along at the junction with the two car parks gives the same amount of time for the car parks at 1am as it does at 1pm! Why? The car parks are closed and there is no traffic going into or coming out of the car parks!

There are too many traffic lights across London in general especially many pelican crossings which could easily be zebra crossings instead but on the subject of the ones you mentioned, I always thought the Elmfield Road one should have a sensor where buses trigger it to turn green

Quite often, especially after 8 or 9 in the evening, the bus lane lights will stay red for minutes at a time. Luckily, the 246 stop is positioned such that it is easy to pull out onto Tweedy Road (since there’s no traffic by that time of the evening) but those bus lane lights arguably need a trigger more than the Elmfield Road ones

I remember a few years ago (probably about 10 years ago now!!) they replaced the lights at the junction of Bromley North station and also at the Tweedy Road/Widmore Road junction. Before they replaced them they were on sensors and at night when the roads were dead you could just roll up to the lights and they would change. Then they changed them to lights that were timer only. So you’d quite often sit there for a minute or 2 at a red light while nothing went the other way. Surely that’s worse for the polar bears??

It’s so frustrating sitting there when there’s nothing around. To be fair though, the Widmore Road/Tweedy Road/Kentish Way lights will miss a phase if there’s no traffic waiting
