Consultation update 21 March 2022 Between 22 November 2021 and 9 January 2022, we ran a consultation to understand your views on our proposals to merge routes 1 and 168 to create a new route for the local network between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water. We also proposed to reroute the 188 so it terminates at Tottenham Court Road instead of Russell Square. We wanted to understand how the proposed changes might impact local residents, businesses and communities. We received 343 responses to the consultation in total. Thank you to those who took part and shared their views. You can find the final consultation report in the ‘Documents’ section of this webpage, which includes detailed analysis of the consultation responses and our responses to issues frequently raised throughout the consultation. Following careful consideration of all responses, we intend to proceed with the following proposals: Merging routes 1 and 168, creating a new route operating between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water Renumbering the new route between Hampstead Heath and Canada Water as ‘Route 1’ Rerouting the 188 so that it terminates at Tottenham Court Road These changes are expected to come into effect in September 2023. Also what about N1 would it be the same or will the route be Hampsted Heath to Thamesmed

Thank God they kept the route 1 number, not having a route 1 is just plain weird.

Not much night life in Russell Square so seems far more reasonable to have routes running into the West End.

I knew that would keep the 1 number over the 168! Surprised they are waiting until September 2023 especially as the 168 contract was extended so could have been withdrawn earlier and the current 1 tender terminated earlier with a new tender for the new combined route. Shows how unjoined up TFL can be really. The original end date of the 168 in September this year would be the ideal time as by then the WHVs from the 119 would likely be spare to use for the extension aswell as nearly a years worth of savings would be made at a time when in June tfl are likely to be asking for a bail out again.

Renumbering. Does the renumbering mean that the original 1 would be discontinued and the 168 is being renumbered 1? Does also mean that the N1 will be separate from 1 and the 1s contract as a standalone route like how the N136 is separate from the 136?

Will the 1s contract be terminated and the 1 taking the 168’s contract I.e the 1 going to Metroline? I wonder if LTs can get around the 1.

If you read the thread or consultation response for a change, you'll see that the changes won't be implemented until September 2023 - 1 and 168 contracts both expire at this time and therefore the revised 1 route will be tendered then.

The combined route will in effect be a brand new route going out on tender and could be won by another company other than GAL or Metroline and will be numbered 1.

September 2023??? Guess I gotta wait for a final trip on the 168

188 to Tottenham Court Road is an interesting one, maintains links to TCR for 1 passengers to change to - already plenty of routes on the Waterloo-Holborn-Russell Square-Euston axis.
One thing I'm wondering about is the X68 workings. Currently these are linked to the 188 because both routes have the same northern terminus. After the rerouting I guess buses will just run light around the corner from Russell Square to TCR or vice versa.

If the 188 is going to Tottenham Court Road at night surely it would make sense to reroute the N1 to Russell Square?

One contract will be issued for the new '1' ... seems it will be winner takes all, whether it be GAL or Metroline ... or some 3rd party imposter

This does make more sense than revising/terminating/compensating contracts a year early. Will be interesting to see how many bidders the revised route 1 gets when tendered - the N1 night service might make the combined contract more ideal to run from a garage south of the river, such as Q/WL or NX.

Interesting to see that LB Camden have an issue with the 188 diversion as they want to remove the 1's stand at TCR, claiming safety issues.
And I know that this is all tied up with tenders but really, 18 more months before this relatively straightforward change takes place? Surely TfL needs to be able to move quicker than this.
