Central line is part suspended between North Acton and West Ruislip due to train cancellations and other tube lines have had minor or severe delays due to the same reason. Interesting night ahead! Southern have nothing out of Victoria due to engineering works and staff shortages aswell.

From what I've heard they are for TV viewing only..... So this stupid announcement created crowds around 500,000 mark to flock to the Embankment on NYE at last minute. All expecting to see fireworks. I was at Westminster and we nearly had people falling in the river. Khan is lucky there wasn’t a disaster that night. His announcement was the reason people were saying they went. They all went home disappointed.

Yes I thought it was pretty stupid, whatever the official announcement it's just going to encourage people to go there and as you say there could have been serious problems.

No fan of mayor, but what do you expect him to say when asked by the media about a load of fireworks. Those fireworks do not exist, they are a figment of your imagination. It was the irresponsible media that publicised it. In middle of pandemic, the public think let's turn this into a super-spreader event. The public are idiots, probably worse than the politicians

How should he have explained it in your eyes. So the media see firework preparations. When asked about, your answer is?

Yet if it was Boris, you’d be singing his praises as usual. People was clearly told not to turn up and they ignored it - it’s their fault.

So London and the BBC are not allowed to make a programme to celebrate the New Year. For the sensible watching at home, sure it was appreciated, and brought a little happiness. COVID has stopped a lot of joy and happiness over the past 18 months ... seems some want to stop a little bit being returned. We need good things to happen in the current climate ... just need everyone to act responsibly and not like idiots.

It was made clear in the run up to NYE that the fireworks were cancelled, why not just leave it at that?

Why did they do that ... did a not public firework event need to be publishised, especially as it was stated it was not an event for the public. The event for the public was cancelled as previously stated, so earlier communication was correct. An unannounced display was planned which was not open to public ... What is wrong with that ... seems it was not the mayor who chose to release details of the event, rather other media outlets. Good to see the spirit of Scrooge lives on in some Londoners
