Well publically they were cancelled until the press made a thing of it. Why did they do that ... did a not public firework event need to be publishised, especially as it was stated it was not an event for the public. The event for the public was cancelled as previously stated, so earlier communication was correct. An unannounced display was planned which was not open to public ... What is wrong with that ... seems it was not the mayor who chose to release details of the event, rather other media outlets. Good to see the spirit of Scrooge lives on in some Londoners If anyone is that bothered about watching a fireworks display on TV just watch a video of a previous years event. If they had spliced together bits of previous few years, many wouldn't have noticed, so you have a point. Actually with modern CGI editing, could have shown someone else's display and superimposed the London skyline. But the mayor opted for real fireworks with all their chemical pollution scattered over London, which was not supposed to be watched by real people on site, just TV viewers. What benefit was that.

Yes wow indeed 🙄 As for your ascertain that "the public are idiots" are you including yourself in that? Assuming of course that you are a member of the public? 😂 Wow, you added more. As a collective the London public are idiots. Myself, and no doubt yourself, are part of this collective. Make of that what you will. From what you say, you are all in favour of a nanny state, with the public seemingly incapable of doing anything unless explicitly told. Maybe you are a huge fan of the Chinese system, where you are told what to do, but have no rights at all?

You could ask, what is the benefit of fireworks any time. Other than people enjoy seeing them there is none. Do you not believe people should be entitled to a little enjoyment over New Year? Have you never got enjoyment of watching New Year firework displays from places like Sydney on TV in the past? Should fireworks be banned per se for the pollution effects, that is a completely different debate.

Fireworks definitely shouldn't be banned, especially displays. I do understand their pollution effects but ultimately it is only once a year such a display happens. I think researching & producing more eco friendly fireworks would be a better solution.

Something other than what he did say ! Yes the public are idiots, but when they die it’s usually someone else’s fault. What exactly? How should he have explained it in your eyes. So the media see firework preparations. When asked about, your answer is? There shouldn’t have been *any* fireworks what’s so hard to understand about that ? People are having to wait 6 hours for an ambulance in London. Not a great idea to stage any spectacle which encourages people onto the streets and into harms way when things are that bad. No fireworks , no media questions, no crowds. It’s a very simple concept.

It was something nice to have after another difficult year for many people, begrudging something as simple as fireworks is ridiculous. Personally I thought it was a pretty pee poor display but the sentiment was there. We aren’t in a lockdown, people are allowed out and if they chose to go sit by the Thames that is their business. Maybe Kahn shouldn’t have spilled the beans so early but a little fun never hurt nobody.

The point I’m making is that the plan that night was changed by the announcement which encouraged thousands more people on the streets, with no safety plan at all in place. It had to be made up on the hoof. It put emergency services under more strain. People turned up and were standing on the edge of bridges and the embankment.Few police and no stewards . No St Johns Ambulance , no extra London Ambulance , no signs , no crowd barriers, absolutely nothing. These things I’ve listed are standard for an event which would attract that number of people. Who all turned up because the mayor (& media) let slip that there was a fire work display. I’ve never witnessed such an unmanaged public event ( that wasn’t a public event) ever. So I’m saying London was lucky there wasn’t a disaster that night. Which would have been anything from people drowning, to crushing.
