I don't know how realistic this suggestion is but perhaps owning a car isn't wise if you can no longer afford it. I've lived my whole life not owning a car and know that I have saved myself a huge amount of money. It does help that I bike most places but even public transport isn't too expensive. I understand some people need a car for work or for stuff like shopping but I don't think that having a car is necessary. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

You live in Inner London, there might be a big difference to Outer London. Out of curiosity if want shopping for something big, how do you get it home? I live in outer London and I can tell you that a car isn't necessary, at least in my case. I live near a train station with two tube lines plus the Elizabeth line is nearby. As someone else mentioned, a car can feel like a luxury and it is not something I want to own in my life when I know I won't use it. The only reason I'd need a car is if my work was outside London, which it isn't and even so I'd never commute outside London to avoid having to use a car. I can see car usage being more important in a place like Biggin Hill where public transport is limited, but then again if you don't want to drive then don't live in a place like Biggin Hill I refuse to believe you're being serious with this post. I absolutely refuse to believe it. "But then again if you don't want to drive then don't live in a place like Biggin Hill". I mean you've come up with some questionable posts in the past but this one I cannot believe you really came on this forum to say that. In fact let me not start today before I get booted out of here.

Depends on what he means but if you don't want to drive then that is true, you should be prepared to make your way around using other means of transport like walking, cycling or public transport. Ultimately "want" and "need" are two very different words, you might not want to drive but if you have a commute that requires a car for whatever reason then unfortunately you'll have to make do and that's why the hike in insurance is devastating to drivers.

I am absolutely 100% serious. I am a realistic person. Knowing that I don't drive or plan to, I wouldn't live in Biggin Hill. The main reason why I live where I live is because public transport is very good here. I work in central, so a bus from Biggin Hill to Hayes, Bromley South or Orpington plus a southeastern service and possibly a tube on top of that is a nightmare scenario, whereas I can hop on a train and get to central within 1 hour and I live in zone 6. I honestly don't know why you're so baffled by this post, it's not absurd at all.

That I get but knowing how it's been presented said individual knew what they meant. Biggin Hill doesn't have a station and thus one is at the mercy of buses going to either Bromley, Hayes, Orpington or New Addington so one would be more inclined to drive.

My original post got deleted in the mass clean up earlier so posting again.
Similar to car insurance mobile phone contacts are another rip off with large price increases. My contact ended this month and noticed prices are now around £60 a month for IPhone contracts! And to make matters worse companies try to get you to pay the phone off over 36 months with 24 month airtime plans. You have to be careful with companies like EE who have yearly price increases, my price plan was £45 two years ago and ended up nearly £60 by the end of the contract.

I made that mistake once by doing a 2 year deal. The first year was fine but I got stung on the second year when it increased because of the APR Rate. Since 2016/17 I've been doing sim only deals.

You need a car living there and that's why there is such opposition there to the ULEZ expansion, they already have clean air.
