It just doesn’t feel very TfL to me even at 2bph. Regular commuter here (I’m actually sitting on the 715 as I type!). I agree - I feel it would be more a Surrey than a TfL service. I think TfL could expand slightly in Elmbridge, but not this way, I’m afraid. Top of my list is a schoolday/time extension of the R68 to the local 6th form college in Thames Ditton, but that’s for another thread. TfL expansion ideas in the shires might make a good little thread. I think it could be interesting if we saw a reverse of the usual funding model so in this case SCC fund an hourly service and then TfL fund additional M-F peak services to make it every 30 minutes. But it is fully tendered by SCC and run to their specifications rather than TfLs.

Your posts I tend to think are usually thoughtful that way I agree, looks like something that could be explored. Would be good to have a service where the operator wants to attract passengers as the fare income adds to their profit, rather than them being a distraction to earning bonuses. Problem is as others have found out, is being outside TfL, no Travelcards, no hopper fare, smaller free horde, and higher fares have previously not been shown to attract custom. Despite people saying direct services are important, they seem to be shunned for a cheaper/free indirect service. With this fare risk, the operator may want a higher than usual payment for running the service, which will be beyond SCCs budget.

So extend a route primarily for a group that doesn't pay fares? Can't see that having much a boost to revenue. Use that logic and we’ll get rid of every single school route. Sorry, but that’s a ridiculous statement. He is right though, it won't bring much in the way of additional revenue and so isn't likely to happen.

Talking of express routes, why does the X26 have such a ridiculously padded timetable? Outside of the morning peak where the timetable is fine, the buses end up waiting at most bus stops for a good few minutes, Worcester Park being the worst by far where it sometimes ends up sitting for over 10 minutes.

What would really help is an X26 bus every 15 minutes, not every 30 minutes, making the timetable less rigid. That'd be super.

Well the route is currently being reviewed by TFL for improvements.

Totally agree and have said this so many times, but regardless of its frequency, the padding in the timetable is ridiculous. Sometimes you can be stuck in bad traffic all the way from one stop to the next and it still arrives early and sits there regulating, and blocking other traffic.

Well the route is currently being reviewed by TFL for improvements. I really hope a frequency increase does happen, the route is a victim of its own success and passenger numbers would definitely continue to grow significantly with a frequency increase - at 2bph many people find alternatives, but at 3 or 4bph the route will become significantly more attractive and people will choose to wait for the X26.

The new Harrow to North Finchley express route sounds interesting, obviously to connect with the X140.

Exactly a scheme we need! I did suggest in the past a new express route along the North Circular running from Brent Cross to Edmonton/Walthamstow.

I like the North Finchley to Walthamstow one, certainly takes pressure off the 34. Problem is no stand space at North Finchley. Also takes pressure off other busy routes such as the 123.

It’s an interesting start but doesn’t go anywhere near addressing the lack of transport options in the suburbs.
