ASLEF has announced further strike action for Thursday 15th September, affecting twelve rail operators: <snip> RMT has now announced that its members will strike on Thursday 15th and Saturday 17th September, at Network Rail and fourteen rail operating companies. Very few trains will operate on the two days, especially on the Thursday, and services on Friday 16th will be reduced with late starts and early finishes.

Many on the far left of politics criticising this. They are wrong. It is the right thing to do and the RMT are standing with the hearts and minds of Britain, in doing so gaining public respect for their noble cause.

People are of course entitled to their opinion, but the rail unions calling off their proposed strikes for September is the right call and responsive to the mood of the wider public. It's also noticeable that the current disputes have been attracting more public support than such action has in previous years. Showing willingness to stand down at this exceptional time will do much to keep members of the public with more moderate views onside.

I'm not sure what public support you are seeing, but I'm certainly seeing a lot more hostility towards the Unions than previous years. Probably was also a decision to not tarnish their reputation even more.

I agree that it's very commendable to call off the planned strikes under the circumstances. I have to say though that I've certainly not noticed much in the way of public support for the strikes although that's probably a debate for another day.

Some news reports describe travel misery for commuters, even though on days like these it's more leisure travellers affected.
