Most routes in this consultation are routes I don’t use very often, so I’m not going to make a load of comment, but one change that does concern me, and I hope the residents kick up a stinking fuss about this, is the loss of the Nunhead part of the 78 without replacement. Can’t the 381 extend there instead?

I've said this before and I will say it again the high ups in TFL seem hell bent on cutting the 53 to Elephant and Castle. They've been at this since the Jubilee Line extension construction days.

Very true, but small parts of Nunhead lose their service entirely with these proposals, quite aside from the P12 being nicely crush loaded single deckers already. As Bonnie Langford said in Just William - I am going to scream and scream and scream until I’m sick...

It's only a few stops, I think it was inevitable once stand space became available at Elephant & Castle.

Nah the signs were there from many years back they've been looking for any and every opportunity in the book to do it.

The 53 is used by people from across South East London who are referred to St Thomas's rather than hospitals more local to them so to say it's only a few stops is missing the point big time. It's a poor cut and should be called out for what it is.

I think it’s one of the changes that will go ahead aswell

I agree with mkay315, TfL since the 1990s have been wanting to hack away at the 53 to Elephant & Castle and now they’ve succeeded. The normalisation of “the hopper fare is there so change buses” attitude that TfL has adopted as if that’s a solution is getting tiresome, South East London doesn’t have the tube connections North London has, and we certainly don’t have our own North London line so routes like the 53 are a godsend, even with the Elizabeth line, people who work long hours at St. Thomas’s Hospital now have an awkward commute.

I like one of the comments made about people getting back into their cars, because it’s true, for a city that’s trying to be green we seem to be hacking at any green alternatives to the car aren’t we.

Agreed. Even though anybody could get from Plumstead/Woolwich etc to 453s at Deptford within hopper range, and same from St Thomas' to Elephant, the withdrawal of the 12 and curtailment of the 53 will just make the 453 and other nearby routes like the 159 into even more unpleasant overcrowded experiences than they already are. If TfL compensate for cutbacks with frequency increases on existing routes the 453 absolutely needs one

It's a poor cut and should be called out for what it is. The conflict with the Mayor’s policies in relation to improving access to hospitals is very ironic. See also the proposed removal of route 56 from St Bart’s Hospital which has a lot of patient referrals from east London. Whoever designed these proposals has little understanding of how London works as a city. I almost wonder whether some of the proposed changes are deliberately designed to be so bad that they can be sacrificed at a later date and TfL can claim they listened to the consultation responses.
