I wonder whether the by-election will be on the same day as Rutherglen?
I have seen mixed reports as to whether Labour or the LibDems are runners-up in Mid Beds.

Shapps at Defence 🤦‍♂️ ... Oh dear. Let us just pray we don't need to use our military to protect us, but to be honest they are not in a great shape when he takes over.

I wonder whether the by-election will be on the same day as Rutherglen? I have seen mixed reports as to whether Labour or the LibDems are runners-up in Mid Beds. At the 2019 election Labour had a considerably larger share of the vote than the Lib Dems, but the Labour share was down whilst the Lib Dems increased. The Greens were nowhere to be seen. Labour is fielding a local man (grew up in the area) and have been campaigning hard - indeed many voters first heard that Nadine Dorries had actually resigned when Labour canvassers told them on the doorstep - and are hopeful that people will switch their votes to Labour rather than the Lib Dems.

Good, very selfish pompous idiot she is. So she is only in there for a peerage; if she can't get it, then her toys are out of the window. People should not be made to get into the house of Lords as they please it is a joke.

You can tell we are getting closer to a general election! I expected Labour will go the opposite way and pledge for the 2030 date.
Rishi Sunak pushes new petrol and diesel car ban back to 2035 in major U-turn

That is a bit of a shock. Was it not Boris who had bought it forward from the initial 2035 date to 2030

I actually think he might of more or less rubber stamped his election defeat as even many in his own party are not particularly happy with these changes

Was it not Boris who had bought it forward from the initial 2035 date to 2030 Boris was told by then girlfriend Carrie, who's an environmental campaigner Quite interesting to see on a car forum (Pistonheads) that insurance firms like LV (not the former W3 bus garage ) are scared to insure second hand electric cars due to fire risks and they think some, like Teslas will suffer more in a smash... no doubt due to disposing of their batteries. So if the insurance industry isn't on board, it's hard for the government to force an already angry public into buying them. I don't know why they aren't rolling out more synthetic fuels that can be used in existing engines that are not fossil fuels What with the country about to enter a recession, he's trying to cling on like an E200 Dart on the 318 It's hard to take these politicians seriously... ironic that Brexit has seen migration at its highest since leaving the EU, no one in the prison boat (health & safety issues), or sent to Rwanda (defeated by migrants' lawyers) Meanwhile Sadiq Khan raised eyebrows by walking to his various meetings in New York (something he would never do in London) I missed the pantomime earlier yesterday lunchtime, I will have to catch it on YouTube. I would have thought Braverman was more of an XL Bully rather than a Rotttweiler

It’s just a bit more breathing room to allow more time for things to happen more naturally. There is nothing stopping car manufacturers effectively halting diesel/petrol sales themselves and promoting greener cars. A bit of pragmatism never hurt anyone and it isn’t like he’s scrapped the policies, rather just gotten rid of the nonsense ones and allowed more time for things to reduce in cost further. Labour committing to 2030 might not do them any favours either.

Its clear that the public won't support a green agenda if it causes major inconvenience.

That is a bit of a shock. Was it not Boris who had bought it forward from the initial 2035 date to 2030 I am all in favour of this, think it is one of the better announcements that have come out from this Tory government. Moving it from 2035 was the biggest mistake. We had the earliest deadline. Why should the UK go it alone, be the guinea pigs, making the mistakes and picking up all the costs, whilst other counties watch and learn as keep the savings from the way the UK went about things? The biggest irony is those moaning about this, probably have the biggest overlap with those wanting to remain in the EU. Guess what we are now aligned with the EU on this issue. You have what you wanted on the issue, alignment, but still you are unhappy.

It is more a tick box exercise to keep the Greta Thunderburgs of this world happy. I love a rottweiler Barverman, I think I would put a poster on my bedroom wall now.

I would have thought Braverman was more of an XL Bully rather than a Rotttweiler They would not used synthetic fuels as there is money to be made and the major manufactures would not make anything out of that. Many EV's are priced very high and making a lot of car makers very tidy profits. A bit of a weird comment about the LV and insurance, how are they to know the car is second hand or not.

You have what you wanted on the issue, alignment, but still you are unhappy. Agree, need to be pragmatic. For sure we all need clean air and decarbonisation but the 2030 deadline was contrived and rushed. It’s obvious that in a cost of living crisis what you don’t want is to encumber hard-working (usually Labour?) voters with an additional burden of switching to a ULEZ compliant car / highly expensive electric car with range anxiety given how patchy the charging network is outside of major cities No wonder that green agendas are facing a backlash now in a lot of places. Sure something might be super green and no emissions but if it costs 5x extra most people won’t be jumping on to it.
