A heat advisory has been issued for this week
Of more interest to Londoners is that many weather models are predicting a hot plume hitting the SouthEast next weekend (16th-18th July) with some showing temperatures as hot as 40c
whilst unlikely to get that hot, todays week ahead weather forecast with Daren Bett is showing London at 36c next weekend.
Central London has lot of concrete that holds the heat, so nighttime temperatures might fall no lower than about 18c
Hopefully garages are doing full maintenance and not putting buses in service without fully working air cooling systems

Days like those remind me of when some bus drivers (including myself) would then drive with the front doors open, bearing in mind you're not supposed to.

First ever red extreme heat weather warning has been issued for Monday and Tuesday.
I dread to think what the tube and buses will be like! My work place is offering those who can to work from home and imagine lots of other places will do the same.

There has been a red warning before (not for heat but for wind when there was storm Eunice in February)

My office has closed for next week because of the expected heat. Hopefully we’ll be closed all summer. Yep, I'm dreading Monday because obviously, working at home isn't an option and during the heat, people go crazy buying things Personally I think I will opt to go into the office. I only live 6-7 minute walk from my local station and its one train into London and then around 5 minute walk to my office. Trains have air conditioning and so does my office, I've found working at home recently quite draining as I just have an open window and a fan circulating the warm air. I know this doesn't apply to everyone though, I am quite lucky in this respect.

Also, I want to experience it properly and be part of any chaos. If working from home, probably best not to open any windows and have them covered (curtain/blinds or anything else). Usually, when in the late 20s/early 30s you can open windows on the non sun facing side and keep a house cool but if it high 30s, probably best to keep everything closed.

Trains are likely to be disrupted from Sunday to Tuesday. Network Rail may impose speed limits if air temperatures exceed 30C, because of the risk of rails buckling and points failing under high-speed stress.
A likely scenario is that all lines in London and the South East will have a blanket 60mph restriction. This will affect in particular longer-distance Inter-city services which will be reduced to up to half of their normal operating speeds, but will also have a significant impact on longer-distance commuter routes where trains normally operate at higher speeds. This will also have a knock-on effect in most other areas of England, and into Wales and Scotland.

If you are travelling by bus, particularly on Monday and Tuesday please be mindful that even with air cooling the cab of a bus can get extremely warm and the driver may need to stop the vehicle and seek a little respite for a few minutes - possibly even find a shop to buy some water. I have no doubt at all that there will be disruption to services due to drivers feeling unwell in the heat but we will all be trying our best to deliver the service
I’m resting Sunday and Monday and am due to start just after 1pm on Tuesday so I’ll be going in at the hottest part of the day on what could possibly be the UK’s hottest ever day so that’s going to be pleasant. Shame I can’t work from home really 😉😉😉
On a serious note though, we are not equipped in this country and particularly in London, for heat of the expected magnitude. It sounds barmy but the guidelines being issued about staying inside, drinking plenty of water and using plenty of sunscreen if you do go out really need to be heeded. The red warning for extreme heat suggests a risk to life even for those who are fit and healthy. It’s a serious situation and needs to be treated as such. Stay safe

Stay safe I do wonder if this should consider closing the central section of the underground it could be a absolute nightmare with temperatures well over 40c underground. I know its probably not practical but could be very dangerous.
