There was also one at Wennington near Rainham which included at least one home destroyed Three fires I see on way home past there at about 14:30 two on the south side and one on the north , south ones looked like landfill sites . Wouldn't be surprised, that landfill site is pretty massive when traveling along the A13. I had a failed attempt at getting the Overground from the new Riverside station today, the plumes of smoke were unavoidable in the skyline.

It’s provisionally the hottest day on record in the UK. It’s 39.1c in Surrey and it’s only just gone 12pm! The record has gone to Coningsby in Lincolnshire, which recorded 40.3C - that's 1.6C above the previous record which itself was only set in 2019. Central London and Heathrow Airport also reached 40C.

Apparently, at least 10 major fires happened in London today including one I had suspicions was a fire that I saw from my train earlier - turns out the one at Wembley that I saw from the train was indeed a fire

Thankfully there isl a change in air already. There is a noticeable breeze and looks like we might get a little rain in east London as its dark and cloudy.

Normally I'm the first to complain in the heat but this heatwave was nicer than others. Despite the excessively (for now) high temperatures the humidity was fairly low so it didn't feel so close and muggy.

While indoors (depending on how your home is set up) can get hot, outside it wasn’t that bad to be honest. I had to walk (and back) b between Finsbury square and bank a couple of times and keeping things sensible made life easy (walk-in shade, drink water etc etc)

Maybe it was different in other parts of London. My indoor temperature was still 33c around 10pm tonight and things indoors are actually still warm to touch.

I had to walk (and back) b between Finsbury square and bank a couple of times and keeping things sensible made life easy (walk-in shade, drink water etc etc) I think this depends on a few factors such as where abouts you are and the time of day. Brixton in the morning was perfectly fine but Brixton at 15:00 was horrible even in shaded areas and even with a breeze which was literally hot air blowing at you. In comparison, High Wycombe wasn't bad in the morning but Thame, Oxford & Aylesbury were all quite stuffy I must say, Chiltern Railways did a good job today - no major disruption outside of 25mph running between Amersham & Harrow-On-The-Hill, the AC on the 165's was decent enough and trains were mostly on time (one incoming train to Marylebone was actually early according to arrivals board. Also, no disruption on buses in Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire either and most tube lines seemed to have run well or fairly well bar some morning issues on the District & Hammersmith & City - the 1971 stock getting some praise for being cooler than the 96 & 09 stock, the latter of which were really stuffy today

Quite shocking seeing the devastation at Wennington on TV, somebody who landed at Heathrow yesterday afternoon said flying over London it looked quite apocalyptic with number of fires burning, apparently it was the fire services busiest day since WW2.
There was also a full scale emergency in the sea at Clacton in Essex and sadly lives have been lost elsewhere in rivers and lakes.
This is why the advice was to avoid non essential travel and potentially putting more strain on the emergency services and Sadiq Khan has been asking people not to have barbecues at the moment for obvious reasons.

No LNER trains to and from King's Cross tomorrow and Tuesday....... Great Northern services are also suspended completely on Tuesday 19th, apart from a shuttle service between Cambridge and Kings Lynn only. Thameslink services are not using the connection to the ECML on both Monday and Tuesday so will only operate on the Bedford route north of St Pancras. Avanti West Coast services collapsed yesterday due to overhead line damage and are seriously disrupted today (Wednesday 20th).
