The UK press is wild. Social media and the press has everyone expecting instant results. We’re living in the microwave ere, where people want instant gratification and to heck with the consequences. In the same breath as it’s absolute stupidity to expect the benefits of Brexit to be realised in the short term, it’s absolute stupidity to expect all the country’s problems to be solved by a new government after only a few weeks. Take a deep breath, step back from the hysteria and realise that this is bonkers. This is the reason why neither party felt they could be honest about the tough decisions that lay in store was because of the press, populists and online cranks who would simply shout loudly until their garbage became accepted as truth by enough people. We’re seeing the reasons why Sunak called an early election. He did it before these hard choices had to be made. We now see he was absolutely right to call the election when he did. I honestly don’t care that Sue Gray is paid £3k more than the PM. The PM is actually paid quite modestly compared to private sector jobs considering the responsibility they bear and the nonsense they have to endure. It’s a non-story. Focus on what Labour is (or isn’t) doing today to make the UK better in 1, 3, 5 and 10 years time. * Housing supply - how and when will it increase the shortage of housing stock in both the private and social sectors to meet demand? * Immigration - No to Rwanda. OK, so now what? People coming over on small boats are passing through many safe countries before they get on those boats. The generosity of the British public is being exploited by people coming here illegally. Not just the gangs. The gangs would have no business model unless people wanted to come here. Get tough on gangs, but what about the people who come here. Legal refugees and economic migrants are not an issue. People coming to the UK illegally then claiming asylum is wrong when they could claim asylum in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Eastern Europe etc. *Brexit - What are they doing to make the UK an economic powerhouse of tomorrow? A chosen place for international businesses to start operations, a place where UK entrepreneurs can create startups, an economy that generates jobs? *Ukraine - Do we really want to get into a proxy war with Russia when our armed forces are not capable of defending against retaliation? All those billions being poured for the foreseeable future into delaying the inevitable. What’s the endgame? That’s not even touching on public sector services which have been decimated by FOURTEEN YEARS of neglect. The first few years of this government is going to be focused on fixing broken stuff rather than building new stuff. But so they don’t slip into another austerity death spiral, we should ensure they don’t drop their focus on the building part. It’s an absolute joke to read the UK media right now. It feels like they want to destabilise the country and would delight to see the government fail and collapse. It IS a story about Sue Gray, if this under Boris, all the lefties would be lapping this up and front page news on the Guardian and Mirror. As for immigration, there is no quick fix and the Rwanda scheme was pathetic. But it is down to the lefties in the first place that allowed the so called illegal immigrants skipping various amounts of other EU countries to come to the UK then claim asylum. The people in the UK have no choice it is down to various lefty organisations and the government why this has happened. The majority of these people coming in this way are being exploited by gangs for years as use of cheap labour and other illegal activities. The sad thing is some of these people being exploited do not realise what they are in for until it becomes too late.

Last week the PM was in Italy to see how their righter than Reform government has reduced boat crossings by 64%, something he praised the Italians for. Answer, all Italian asylum requests are sent to and processed in Albania. How ironic it would be, if Labour go for a proven model similar to Italy. But having campaigned so hard against Rwanda, are the governments hands tied from implementing a tried and proved to work process? When you campaign against something in opposition with no real alternative options, you get found out. The thing with Sue Gray, she was the civil servant that was supposed to write an independent report into the COVID partygate affair. Yes, the Conservatives helped to bring themselves down, but for the writer of the report, was so d*mning, at the same time supposedly independent to jump ship, immediately resign, get a top job with Labour, and is now paid more than the PM ... is this a reward for performing a hatchet job on the Boris administration which is not what civil servants to. Certainly does not appear whiter than white, and certainly has wiffs of corruption about it. I think Sue Grays position tarnishes this government somewhat, and they would be better off without her, or can they not do that because she has so much dirt she can spread, Labour's Dominic Cummings?

From all accounts it seems Starmer cannot function without Gray. But this latest scandal, together with the Sir Kier Freebie and Lady Victoria Sponger scandal, taking money from pensioners, early prison releases for serious offenders whilst imprisoning minor offenders are all early notches on the belt of another corrupt government. A government that is only a few months old and built around people who repeatedly called out the previous governments for the exact same things. You really couldn’t make it up and honestly if they don’t seek a soft budget for their first year it will be their undoing. If they go harsh who knows how the country will revolt. Blaming the last government has already worn thin and that is why the media has pounced already on every scandal they can. Not only does it sell newspapers and bring viewer numbers it also is a great way of reading the nations mood. I am so tired of this and it’s been 3 months.

Labour is still polling well compared to the Tories, so I don't think they're too concerned. If the biggest issue they've got is someone being paid for doing a job then I doubt it's any huge issue as someone else managed to crash the economy, make a load of people homeless and do a runner within 6 weeks.

Polling well against the Tories, but what's that really saying. All parties support is dropping with only the two extremes showing increasing support, Green's and Reform. The ironic thing that despite Labours support declining, they would still be predicted to get 2 more seats than they have currently got. How's that work?? I used the word extreme in the sense of the UK political spectrum. Compared to countries such as France, they have more extreme parties on both sides of their government.

Labour have previous form for this with Shami Chakrabarti's whitewash report into anti-semitism whilst Corbyn was leader. She was rewarded with a peerage weeks after delivering the much criticised report...

So much tribal drivel. Honestly, look at the state of the country. Forget all this tit-for-tat nonsense. The absolute state of the UK right now. It’s embarrassing. The Tories had 14 years, which was a decent enough run to implement their strategy for the UK. The country is now in a worse state in many aspects. Labour will now implement fixes to the problems. The focus should be on ensuring the fixes do not inflict medium-long term damage and that the government are doing things today to make us successful tomorrow. This did not happen under the last government where the press was talking about Eton and pig heads etc whilst austerity was being implemented and locked in.
Brexit has given the UK a massive opportunity to win or fail. To win, we need to develop infrastructure and critical thinking skills to fill the gaps left behind by our reliance on the EU. But the political media would rather have you all focused on Eastenders-like stories than thinking about what will actually make a difference to the future of our children. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch.

All I will say for this is leave them to it. For some when reality hits closer to home then they'll learn.

Austerity isn’t going anywhere and the current government will just use the already tired “last government” excuse to raise taxes, cut services and implement schemes that don’t resolve the issues that exist today. There is no point planning for a future if you can’t live today. How many times in the next few weeks are we going to hear £22bn black hole? Even though the majority of it has been caused by pay increases to civil servants and could be easily resolved by cancelling money to Ukraine and £11bn on climate change in Africa.

The root cause for the black hole is stagnation for 16 years or so. To say our financial woes are caused by giving civil servants pay increases is myopic and plain wrong. Firstly median civil service pay over the past 14 years has been quite flat - certainly hasn’t kept pace with private sector pay or inflation: www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/civil-service-payWe have media whipping up the public to deny NHS workers decent levels of pay…and on the other hand NHS workers looking to work overseas for better pay and quality of life. Same could be said about teachers too. It’s all a zero sum game without economic growth. Deny public sector workers more pay all you like. The public sector will just go down the toilet, be more vulnerable to corruption and skilled people will just leave the country. At the end of it all, you will be left shaking your head angry at the right, left or whoever you want to blame for the poor education and healthcare you get for your taxes. Bottom line is we need taxes and revenue from a huge surge in economic activity and growth to pay for an improved quality of life. A shift to a growth mindset is required to get us where we need to go: cps.org.uk/media/post/2024/britains-real-black-hole-is-far-larger-than-22bn-and-far-harder-to-close/

We already have one of the highest tax burdens in modern history and it is looking increasingly likely that burden will increase again after the Autumn budget. I’m making the case for increasing the tax base through increased business profits (more money raised through corporation tax) and increased employment (more wages to collect tax from). Or more generally, by increasing GDP the government tax take will increase. Growth is the only way out.
