Fixing Easter would offend a lot of people, both Christians and Jewish. Also adding bank holidays would cost the economy billions every summer and really affect productivity in businesses across the nation as people would choose to tie it to holidays. Be grateful we aren’t like most of the world and have bank holidays on Mondays only. Everywhere else they hold it on the day it falls. If Mayday fell on a Wednesday that’s the holiday, likewise if it fell on a Saturday/Sunday then there is no replacement day. So a lot of countries might get more days on paper but there is always a chance of a lower physical count. There's no reason why a Bank Holiday could not be on the following Monday in lieu of a weekend day - after all, we do it for Christmas and New Year. That said, I am happy for the UK to have a Bank Holiday on the first Monday in May rather than on 1st May. They don’t do lieu bank holidays in most countries. If it falls on a weekend it stays on the weekend and that’s just tough luck. It’s incredibly disruptive if it falls on a Thursday for example as I work exclusively with continental Europeans and you can never reach them on a Friday if the BH is a Thursday.

Thank you for your replies. About Easter, the suggestion I heard a few years ago was Easter Sunday being standardised to the Sunday after the first Saturday in April, so always between April 2nd and 8th. The history concerning Friday April 7th may be the reason. As Christmas and New Year are absolutely fixed regardless of day of the week, and most others relatively fixed, I enjoy Easter varying from year to year. I wonder why London (and some other places but not all) have Saturday bus services on Good Friday but Sunday services on Easter Monday. Talking of Diwali, I enjoyed seeing the Diwali lights in Leicester last October I had coincidentally timed my night in the area at that time. I agree that we almost have too many Bank Holidays in the Spring. I'd like May Day replaced by a Bank Holiday in October, just before the clocks go back. The customers on the phone this afternoon were fine. I guess they were in a good mood this sunny Bank Holiday but also recognised that it was useful having us still open today. Anyway, normal service is hereby resumed, in that I shall not be back until Saturday.

Another disadvantage about bank holidays is that shops close early. It really feels like another Sunday!

Another disadvantage about bank holidays is that shops close early. It really feels like another Sunday! Really don’t think you can compare it to a Sunday, yes shops shut early but not as early as a Sunday. I can’t really work out why you so hung up and negative about a public holiday. Don’t worry you won’t have anymore until August!

Though people still do the same at weekends. As for my negative comments bank holidays means nothing to me since I don't have a Mon to Fri job so I don't benefit from an extra day off.

Think what’s needed is a bit more of an equitable distribution. Right now we go from new year to Easter straight, then 2 in May (which may imply 4 holidays in 6-7 weeks!), 1 in august and then straightaway Christmas, Boxing Day and new year
Leaving aside Christmas, Boxing Day, new year and Easter, think 1 in may is enough. Then 1 can be moved to July (middle?) and 1 in October (new date). That’s it

Another disadvantage about bank holidays is that shops close early. It really feels like another Sunday! Its not so much shops closing early as such that is awkward. It's just that some shops decide on unique opening hours that do not apply on any regular day. I remember a Sainsbury's closing at 5pm Sundays, otherwise 8pm apart from a late opening day (IITC Thursday at 9pm). So, it was seriously unpredictable that they would close at 7pm on the Bank Holiday! Even opening Sunday hours would have been simpler. That said, different schedules over Christmas & New Year, giving each day a character of its own, is part of what I like about that time of year. These are usually (though not always) advertised properly at least.
