Having been a semi regular cable car user over the last few months, I am surprised to see that the price has gone up from £5 to £6. Quite frankly I think that that is ridiculous! Not even a zone 1 tube journey costs that much! Whilst the two methods of transport are different I think that the cost should be lower like £3.50/£4. River crossings in East London are very sparse and there's only two foot crossings across the Thames. Those living in North Greenwich are most unfortunate to be stuck at the top of the Greenwich Peninsula. Yes there is the Jubilee line but those who don't want to take the train to central London are stuck with the 188 which isn't the fastest of options and those wanting Canning Town or cross river options only have the Jubilee line and the cable car

It's because the cable car is a tourist attraction, anyone who actually wants to get between the two ends will just take the Jubilee Line.

Wouldn't go as far as saying it will close down, there are still a lot of people who use it Believe at one point there were only 5 regular users. Genuinely think it's probably better to completely close it and reopen it as a tourist attraction. Could even charge people around a tenner for a rounder and if its officially an attraction then people will pay for it.

Not seen any latest figures but they are not likely to be much better than last summer. They also really struggled to get sponsorship for the service.

Well that’s not the same is it because it was remodelled as an entertainment venue. I doubt the Dome would have lasted if stayed as it was. The Cable Car is not exactly a huge revenue generator for TfL. Does it even cover its costs?

It was open for temporary use after it closed. Over Christmas 2003 there was a winter wonderland event and in 2004 the charity Crisis used it. Then of course in 2007 it reopened as the o2. Apparently it cost £1m per month to maintain.

But that’s what Paul is saying - they made that work despite being labelled a white elephant so there isn’t anything stopping them from doing so with the cable car. Holding events in the area like the Pokémon World Championships that were held nearby in recent times would also help as the cable car was not only used more so during that period but advertised the event too

But it's a good attraction to have

Regarding usage of the Cable Car, I personally think it was built in the wrong place. Many tourists going to the O2 will board it at the Greenwich end, possibly even for a round trip, but there simply isn't that much at the Royal Docks end other than Excel. Very few people will use it to commute at any location, as cheaper river crossings are available using the train.
I think it would have worked better still starting at Greenwich Peninsula, but crossing the Thames over the other side to Canary Wharf, with the terminal located near the Wood Wharf development. Since Canary Wharf is a much busier area than the Royal Docks, it would likely see more passengers.
