GWR services are set to operate to and from London Euston, when trains are unable to operate into London Paddington during work on the new Old Oak Common interchange station. This will occur over the Christmas and New Year period for the next few years, as well as some other occasions.
London Euston was chosen over London Waterloo and other alternatives as it would mean the lowest extended journey times (about 15 minutes extra in each direction). GWR would be able to operate a limited number of its main line trains (class 800 & 802) into the station and would have staff present. The Night Riviera sleeper service does not normally operate between Christmas and New Year, but at other times it too will be diverted into London Euston with passengers able to use the First Class lounge there. GWR services would be concentrated on platforms 14-16, away from other services, this is to reduce congestion at the Station.
The plan would be to operate two trains an hour to and from London Euston: one an hour to/from South Wales, amd one an hour to/from the South West of England. Additional long-distance services would terminate/start from Reading. Local services would terminate/start at Ealing Broadway for connections with Underground services, some of these could be extended beyond Didcot Parkway to Swindon, Bristol Parkway and even Cardiff Central. Elizabeth Line trains would be suspended between Ealing Broadway and Paddington.
Although diverted long-distance services would stop at Ealing Broadway for crew changes and to lower/raise pantographs (trains will operate to and from Euston on diesel power) passengers will not be able to board or alight there and it will not be possible to use these services to travel between Ealing Broadway and London Euston.
One side-effect of the closures is that GWR will not have access to its North Pole depot (the former Eurostar facility). GWR is looking at other locations to act as temporary 'mini-depots' and even the Didcot Railway Centre is being considered as a possibility.
