A major review of overcrowding at Euston is to begin immediately. The giant advertising boards have been turned off with immediate effect. The station is a horrible experience. Pleased to see they plan to tackle the late announcement of train platforms so that there is not a mad rush all at once! ——- Euston station's giant advertising board switched off in five-point plan to tackle overcrowding Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has ordered Network Rail to declutter the station concourse and make changes to the way it handles train announcements www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/london-euston-station-departure-boards-network-rail-concourse-louise-haigh-b1185923.html

That would help a bit, it certainly works at stations like Victoria and Waterloo where you can see what platform the train will be departing from even before it has arrived in some cases.

I was at Euston today heading up to Liverpool and noticed the main information screen blank.
So what does it actually achieve by providing less information on departures? I do not understand the wisdom of turning a very expensive screen off? Surely more and accurate information would be a good thing?
Euston is the worst station in the Network Rail portfolio, if is like going back in time by standing on a 21st century concourse to then going down a difficult ramp to dim and uninviting platforms that are stuck in the 20th century.
I thought Euston Station was going to be totally rebuilt like London Bridge was as part of the HS2 development? I know HS2 is stuck in limbo. But I would have thought the long term solution to overcrowding is to press ahead and rebuild Euston ASAP with HS2 services going all the way to Manchester.

As I understand it there used to be a big massive screen that used to have departures on it then it was replaced with the big massive screen that is there now to show solely adverts ( like the ones in Piccadilly Circus) and the information was put on to smaller screens , But this rushing and overcrowding has been a problem for a few years as I've seen on here and elsewhere it's only now it's getting it got traction with the media Network Rail are bothered .

The rushing and overcrowding was happening over 20 years ago when I used Euston on a daily basis to get home from university so it’s definitely not a new thing.

Euston is unremittingly awful, by far the worst of the London terminals, and also probably the worst staff too. I use real time trains to let me know in advance of platforms, but that doesn’t work at Euston as the staff do not want passengers hanging around anywhere near the platform entrances until they formally announce the platform 🙄 As such, I avoid using this miserable station at all, and luckily I have the luxury of being able to do this as it never forms part of any regular commute I do.

General go to for most people is to just use Trainline, it alerts you of the platforms before it's updated on realtime trains. There was once a case where Avanti cancelled the train and the Trainline app had informed everyone who then stormed platform staff who had no clue about it.

Tracksy is also really good for finding out platform numbers before the information is given out.

The modelling they did showed that the removal of the big screen would in theory spread out the crowd more (Jim Waterson's new substack has a diagram of that). The issue seems to be that they haven't evaluated the flow of passengers, just where they are standing to stare at a screen. With the old screen it used to be in my opinion better as passengers would congregate along the big screen, now that they've spread the crowd out more it tends to just clog the station more as there are more places where you can't get around people looking up at the screens (on top of complaints from some that you can't use the cafe areas up top anymore as you can't see the new screens from there). The boarding thing which could be resolved with or without a change of screens, is as you say, separate.

It is, but it still is no use at Euston where staff gleefully corral passengers on the concourse until the last possible second

I do remember the big new screen having train information, I guess that big screen is not recent, I am not disputing that recently it is just used for advertising. If a poster comes back to say the big screen has just gone in this year, then I am way off then.
It just seems a waste to spend all that money on a quality screen for it not to be used. Euston has a small concourse area, about the same size of Charing X, but 4 times the size. In the short term the only way to move people off the concourse and that is by getting them down on the platform and on to their trains.

The big advert screen is a new installation which was installed sometime last year. They took down the old train time arrivals screen which was large but don't believe as big as the advert screen. I don't believe the new screen ever displayed train times as the new smaller screens were in use whilst work was taking place installing the new big screen.

Thanks, must be that, I kind of remember screes like they have at Charing Cross at some stage, or is that my vivid imagination?
