The MP for Putney is currently campaigning for better bus services for Putney and Roehampton as a cause of urgency for this area. The petition can be signed on the MP's website: www.fleuranderson.co.uk/Some interesting ideas from the campaign include; - Prioritise a wider review of all bus services for Putney and Roehampton - Route 170 being converted to a double deck route and becoming a Roehampton to Clapham Junction route - More reliable and frequent services on bus routes 85 and 265 The Route 170 idea is very interesting and it is something I would support providing that stand space could be found at Clapham Junction. The Clapham Junction - Victoria section could become a part of another new route in the process. Interested in your thoughts on this.

If it was curtailed at Clapham Junction it would be such a short route I wonder how many people would go upstairs anyway?

I may be wrong but I seem to remember that the extension of the 170 over the 239 to Victoria was similarly campaigned for, on the grounds of providing better links to Roehampton.

Yes route 170 does definitely need double deckers, the route always packed with standing loads at nearly all times of the day. It would have them if it wasn't for the low bridge in Battersea that it passes under. There was a proposal by londonbuses which I agree with with a further restructuring of the Wandsworth borough area; Route 156 becomes a Wimbledon to Clapham Junction route - Route 156 often suffers reliability issues nowadays because of the traffic hotspots it hits along its route in Wandsworth Town, Southfields and Wimbledon. The shortening of route 156 to Clapham Junction from Vauxhall will aid reliability which route 156 desperately needs due to the route being the sole route between Wandsworth and Wimbledon. Route 170 is converted to a double deck operation and becomes a Roehampton to Vauxhall route (existing route 170 to Clapham Junction then existing route 156 to Vauxhall) - This route will provide new links between Roehampton, Putney Heath to Battersea Power Station, Battersea Park Station and Vauxhall (which obviously have a tube link to Victoria via the Victoria line) My idea here; new route 387; New route launched between Tooting, St. George's Hospital - Victoria via Clapham Junction - This new route would go via existing route 170 to Clapham Junction then via route 319 to Wandsworth Common Station then via route 690 then on to St. George's Hospital.

That Superloop 2 though could be at the expense of the 493 though so could be a case of giveth and taketh in the same breath. Some people were mentioning on here that the 265 hasn't been running reliably so I wonder if some constituents have contacted regarding that. I suspect 85's reliability has taken a hit due to the Kingston Bus Station works - I know the one way system was worse than normal to navigate since the works.

Her time would be better spent lobbying TfL, the DfT, H&F council and the government to fund the full restoration of Hammersmith Bridge which would easily relieve a lot of the Putney congestion problems. As for the 170 it shares the majority of its time with other routes only serving one small section between Clapham and Roehampton alone, a frequency increase would more than likely resolve its issues. However, again, if she looked at the actual problem and lobbied Network Rail and Wandsworth Council perhaps a long term plan to lower the road in Clapham could allow double deckers along the entire route.

Something needs to happen to the 170, you could increase frequencies but then you're just throwing more buses into traffic. In terms of a more reliable service to the 85/265/other routes it would help if you could actually drive through Putney and surrounding areas without sitting in an eternal traffic jam. Fleur only mentions the 85/170/265 but the 220, 270, 493 and others are in all sorts of trouble too.
I like the 156/170/St Georges-Victoria idea mentioned above but there's no stand space I think, the 493 can have 2 buses in stand which is the max otherwise it blocks the G1 and the 155/264/280 spill into car parking spaces and the first stop regularly. The 156 is another route which has been suffering for a while, I can remember as far as 2021 having ridiculous experiences on that route.

Might be wrong but I'm expecting route 493 to be shortened and reduced in frequency to 4bph (every 15 minutes) when the Superloop 2 route between Wimbledon and Richmond is in service. Could that release stand space at St. George's?

I think the 493 should not be decreased because it will still be busy to and from Tooting unless the Superloop follows it there which would be excessive outside of certain hours

I suspect the Superloop 2 Wimbledon to Richmond will be a double deck bus service with every 12 minute frequency which would be a major boost for the current route 493 passengers in terms of capacity and frequency so I guess they would that to support their proposals and general argument. Going by to the shortening of route 493, I would hazard a guess that TFL will cut it to Barnes Common in conjunction with the Wimbledon - Richmond Superloop route being launched.

These ideas around the 156 would make a lot of sense. The only thing is the area around Battersea Village should ideally maintain the current 170's links at least as far as Wandsworth. If the 170 were to be split, perhaps the Victoria end could divert to terminate at Wandsworth Riverside, then the 485 to run direct again? Or even continue further to Putney Bridge (using the 414 stand), which would help relieve the busy 220/270 here (running more frequently than the 485) - this would still be shorter than going to Roehampton as present. The 378/485 could then merge to operate between Putney Bridge and Mortlake, but looping via Castelnau and Lonsdale Road. And at the same time, merge the 209/533 together to operate through to Hammersmith, but via Church Road in both directions. Also, if stand space is needed for a curtailed 156 at Clapham Junction, perhaps the C3 could have a short extension to create some new local links to the south east. For example, could go along the south edge of Clapham Common to Clapham South Station, then terminating at Balham (using the 315's stand)? Or for a more minor change, would it help to simply divert the 170 to terminate at Sloane Square instead of Victoria? This would link Battersea Village to the shops on Kings Road, perhaps more useful than Victoria via Royal Hospital Road? The 319 could then swap to Victoria, also increasing capacity via Royal Hospital Road - current 319 passengers could still use the 49 to Kings Road.

Your alternative suggestion for a Victoria to Wandsworth Riverside route is interesting, my concern is that there would be too much duplication/ parallels between the new route and existing route 44. Also, think with the hopper fare, the links for Battersea Village and Wandsworth Town can still be made with interchange of route 156, 170 and new route 387 at Clapham Junction. New route 387 would be a single deck route by design so I don't know how much capacity it would be able to give routes 220, 270 and 485 if it was extended to Putney Bridge. I don't envision a strong business case on why it should. The rule of three comes to mind when making major changes in an area like this with too many changes within an area can cause major confusion. It would make sense for changes to happen that passengers could easily follow.

The Avenue & Clapham Common West Side are prone to heavy traffic (probably why the contra flow bus lane exists on Clapham Common North Side so the 35 & 37 can escape not being snarled up in the traffic) and the C3 already has to suffer the Earls Court one way system which is a magnet for traffic.
