Some years ago (1970s), I read in "Buses" about a couple of guys who made this journey by normal service bus (no coaches or express services permitted).
Anyone care to repeat the journey now (by armchair if you prefer) or starting from Lands End if necessary? It could make interesting reading.

Well I have a newspaper article here (from a year or so ago) of Keith Merrett who decided to travel from his Sandown home (on the IoW) to John o Groats by local buses.
It took him 8 days to complete the trek spending 48.5 hours on board buses and spent £103.20 in fares, complete with a 36 HOUR wait for at Lairg in the Highlands for his next bus to Tongue.
Breakdown of journeys is a s follows
--Day 1: Sandown-Portsmouth-Winchester-Basingstoke-Newbury-Didcot-Oxford-Banbury --Day 2: Banbury-Brackley-Northampton-Kettering-Market Harborough-Leicester-Loughborough-Nottingham-Mansfield --Day 3: Mansfield-Worksop-Rotherham-Barnsley-Leeds-Ripon-Northallerton-Richmond-Darlington --Day 4: Darlington-Newcastle-Berwick Upon Tweed- Edinburgh-Linlithgow-Falkirk-Stirling --Day 5: Stirling-Crieff-Perth-Dundee-Montrose-Stonehaven-Aberdeen-Inverurie-Huntly-Macduff-Elgin --Day 6: Elgin-Forres-Nairn-Inverness-Tain-Lairg --Day 7: Whole day waiting for a remote highlands bus! --Day 8: Lairg-Tongue-Thurso-Jonh o Groats

Thanks for that TangyTango. Seems he made heavy weather of it. There's an article in a 2000 issue of Buses about a Lands End - JOG trip in May of that year, which took 5 days.
