I don't think I've ever seen a guard/conductor on the Overground. Am I using the wrong bit? Most, if not all GOBLIN trains have a guard who stands at the 1st set of doors in the 2nd car. Must be a legacy leftover from the Silverlink days then.

GOBLIN trains as well as all North London line services are conductor operated as the Class 172s were not designed for DOO (Driver Only Operation). I believe OPO is a term used for one person operation on buses.

Do they have any other duties apart from opening and closing the doors ?? I think conductors are a great for public transport however I think they should have a more customer facing role like a PSA on the DLR other than sitting in the cab at the back seems a big waste of money .

I can't see why they're really necessary, to be honest. ELL copes fine without them.

As this is a bus forum I'm thinking maybe in the future there could be job sharing. So staff could spend 3 days bus driving and 2 days walking up and down trains and vice versa? What do people think ?

During the rush hour the guards work from the rear of the train, also it's not odd to see the guards work from the second doors in the first carriage as not all doors have guard panels on the 172's.

Well it's from my experience, but yes I couldn't remember if it was the 1st or 2nd car. Never used the GOBLIN in rush hour

The Overground has been a massive success to this line and peak hour overcrowding is now just as bad as it was in the Silverlink days with every peak hour train wedged (and that is considering double the frequency). Indeed LO has have to bring out the spare set to operate a relief, but it isn't enough. What is really needed is three coaches, but the eastbound platform at South Tottenham cannot accomodate them.

It's a shame some form of selective door opening couldn't be introduced for South Tottenham, as I went on the GOBLIN in the middle of the day on Tuesday and even then it wasn't exactly lightly loaded. The Overground seems to be a victim of its own success, the ELL is equally rammed. (However, in the case of the ELL extra carriages are being added)

Sir Peter Hendy told the GLA Transport Committee that he had expected the go ahead for funding last October in the Autumn Statement. The apparent approval was withdrawn at the last minute - no one has said why. Another attempt is being made now to try to persuade Government to announce the spending in the Comprehensive Spending Review in late June. However Mr Hendy did say that TfL are having to fight very hard to retain existing levels of funding never mind get any extra and GOBLIN needs extra money. While Mr Hendy has not specified the train type to be used if electrification is approved he has said they will be at least 4 cars long, possibly 5. I would not be surprised if TfL have negotiated a possible option and price for extra 378s as part of the deal for the extra carriages. If we don't get approval very soon then it will be too late because if the work does not complete before 2018 it will become extremely difficult to get possessions on the route to do the work. This is because a lot more freight will run via the GOBLIN when Crossrail opens in 2019. There will be far fewer freight paths via Stratford as they would conflict with Crossrail services given they cross "on the flat".

Swathes of passengers are left behind by the 08:00-09:00 trains from every station from Honor Oak Park. I'm sure a proper bus route from New Cross Gate to Surrey Quays would probably partially alleviate the problem - the 225 is too slow and only uses single decker, so isn't really a viable alternative. The trains fill up at New Cross Gate to the absolute brim, and then massively empty out at Canada Water - to the extent where there's seats available on some peak trains if you're going further than Canada Water.

Call your new route the 415 after I've removed the pointless current one ;D
