Interesting: you can never get a passback error code when using National Rail Oyster card readers (only at stations where ticket gates for the Underground and National Rail are seperate, or where there is National Rail only, AND where travelcards are valid, but prepay is not valid on National Rail), e.g. at London Victoria, Charing Cross, London Bridge, Clapham Junction, Vauxhall, etc. But not at Wimbledon, Richmond, West Brompton, etc.
I tried this at Charing Cross the other day. Using a passenger Oyster card, I passed it over the reader 3 times in succession, each pass was valid, and the gates remained open for 3 passengers (they all had valid tickets mind you!) to pass!! I also exited at London Bridge one time and my friend had a Staff Pass which wouldn't let him out (Staff Passes cannot be used on National Rail - he wasn't aware), so I passed my ticket over the same reader and it opened!
On the tube, once you've passed thru once, you cannot pass your ticket over the reader again (you get code 21 double entry or 42 passback), regardless of what ticket you have. Is this a flaw with the NR Oyster system?... leaves it open to abuse..! I do notice that the Oyster card journey history does not show National Rail only journeys, which leads me to suspect that NR gates do not register any oyster details, just 2 commands: valid or not, and opens the gates accordingly.

If i remember rightly, Network Rail werte having an arguement with TfL over the use of Oyster Cards on their system. At Romford one day one of the gate guards were manually scanning Oyster Card users rather than having then go through the barriers.
Personally, i think that every London area rail station should have the Oyster facility installed, otherwise why allow travelcards, be it paper or Oyster, onto the system?? It's something TfL and NR need to sort out quickly
