Just been on the Eurostar to Gare du Nord (Paris), very fast and efficient! Well, aside from my train from Paris back to St Pancras broke down 10 miles outside Paris (front locomotive packed up) and we all had to go back to Paris and change trains... ;D It would be great if we could get more high speed lines in the UK, the French rail system is very good

The French railway system is heavily subsidised and the French non-TGV network carries fewer passengers than the number that arrive at Waterloo every day.
That's why we don't have the high speed lines and why our system seems inferior compared to SNCF.

One of the reasons France has a monsterously huge network of HSL is because it's many times bigger than the UK. In the UK, the geography of the country is drastically different too. France is not packed full of high hills, mountains like the Pennines and challenging gradients.
It would be lovely to have a HSL linking London with Edinburgh (with a branch to Glasgow) or something like that, but we'll not get it any time soon.
I did the direct 373 to Disneyland Paris in 2006 as part of a family holiday. Great fun it was to storm through France at 186mph. I've also done a couple of TGVs a few years ago, great they are.
But nothing will never compare to the HST...

Anything much faster would probably mean a total reconstruction of the line and cutting out most of the stops
