All the indiators are that Boris will be the new Major of London. That will result in sweeping changes for Londons public transport. He has already pldged to significantly reduce costs and improve efficiency. This can only be good for Londons hard pressed commuters.

That may be how it is now, but who's to say this won't have changed by tonight? Although I understand he's currently leading by a significant amount.
And Boris may be talking about these improvements for London, but it's whether he will actually stick to his word and implement these improvements, and in turn that's if he wins. We shall have to wait and see the 'official' results tonight.
Either way I cannot say anything else since I didn't vote, so I can't complain about who gets in. As lc1 said a while ago if I choose not to vote then I automatically lose the right to have my say about who should win and who shouldn't.

If that's true then i think i might finish my course at uni and leave asap. This city is going to become even worse than it was and i truly fear for it

And I'm saying that despite that famous phrase "when a person is tired of London, they are tired of life"  Still not complaining about whoever gets in as Mayor but it's merely an observation I've made. |

This city is going to become even worse than it was and i truly fear for it The latest reports indicate Boris is pretty much home and dry. He has with four fifths of votes counted most first preference votes in eight constituencies. Labour's Ken Livingstone had the most in six. Second preferences have not yet been counted but it does not look as if he wil need to win. The winner might not now be declared untill just before midnight. Boris is one of those people that does not come across well on TV but when you meet him he comes acros very well and most people that have spoken to him have ben impressed We should start to see some changes with Londons bus services to get them back on track. I think we will also see changes with Londons Congestion zone which has not delivered. It has actuall considerably increased polution and congestion has also increased BEndies being in part a cause of that with pollution it was the buses that accounted for the increase. |

Sorry, but i remember the dark days of the Tories being in power and i never, ever want to go there ever again. If anyone is to blame for the mess that we're in right now then it's down to the Tories. If it wasn't for them, our transport system would still be London Transport and British Rail. I might be 21, but i remeber those days too well

Well done to Boris!!! I didn't vote but the only reason for that was I don't live in a London borough.
If he does a good job or bad at least he will be a laugh!!! ;D ;D ;D

I love London, i love the people in it, but this idiot is going to ruin everything about London. I'm sure of it.
I stayed quiet when everyone was debating this issue really, i'll also say that i DIDN'T vote for Boris as it's totally against my ethics. I'll give him time, but if he does nothing by the end of the first year, then Londoners have made a very grave mistake

Well he is off to an excellent start. He is standing down as an MP so that he can work full time as London's mayor. I'd hardly use the term 'excellent start' to describe jacking in his old job. More a case of what any successful candidate would do anyway. Just the same as any of us when we get a new job. Handing in your notice isn't exactly showing leadership prowess, more a case of the blindingly obvious. I'm fully expecting you to report back that his first day in office was a total success and his mettle as a leader is assured when in reality his first day will involve him rolling up to city hall, getting a few pictures taken by the press and him being shown how to work the coffee machine where the mayoral toilet is. Bob, bring on the spin... |

I think you are very right - I can't believe he got in. I expect that Londoners wanted a change. I love London, i love the people in it, but this idiot is going to ruin everything about London. I can't believe so many people here are so negative about it when Boris hasn't even done anything yet!
He might be crap, but at least give him a chance. I'm very much of the opinion that he might well be awful, but he can't be worse than Ken, especially since London was much better off before it had a mayor than when Ken was in charge!

You also have to remember that Ken has left Boris a TfL that is heavily in debt.

If seems that many voted for the Tories (nation-wide) not because they particularly liked them, but rather they thought Labour hopeless.
I don't think the trouble with Gordon Brown and Ken Livingstone is that they are bad. They have ambitions, in most cases the right ambitions, but the way they try to deliver them is often not well thought out. They fail to address the fundamentals and think pumping in masses of public money solves everything.
All the Tories are good at is attacks after attacks. They lack substance and when asked about specific policies all they can come up with is "We don't know everything that goes on in government and we will try to do this and that..."
