i recently went to Cape Town, South Africa for a wonderful two weeks. I would have loved to of had a ride on one of the buses especially around the Cape of Good Hope, but apparently they are two dangerous especially for tourists (reports of shootings and muggings etc) The buses are pretty much all operated by Golden Arrow who use MAN coach-type buses (dont know the exact type), although amazingly i saw a Alexander ALX200! All the buses have a digital destination display and none of the routes have numbers. The bus infrastructure could be much better there, timetables dont really exist but i suppose only local people use them so they know how it all works. I would love to live in South Africa, but one thing i would miss is our brilliant bus services, which i took for granted

Truffles, you say you would love to live in South Africa, but if you lived outside Cape Town or Jo'burg, you would need your own transport as bus services outside these 2 cities are almost non-existent! I was at my brothers' in Vereeniging (south of Jo'burg and a population ofabout 130 000) from March until May and the only bus service was a route to Evaton, a mixed township!
If you wanted to emigrate there, you would also need to pay a bond of about £100 000 to the RSA Government and give proof that you had enough income to support yourself financially. There is no NHS there and my retired brother pays Medical Insurance of about £200 a month for him and his wife and the same for Armed Response. (That's a monthly premium to a Security firm in case of break-in, hi-jacking, shootings etc!)
Though the cost of living is much cheaper than Britain, Medical Aid and Armed Response more than take away the benefits of cheap food and petrol. Take my advice and stay in Britain!

Simes,
They do have the SA Police Service, but things like hi-jackings, knifings and murder are just routine, so hardly get noticed or mentioned!

Bighat, your post reminds me of a joke by an Afrikaaner comedian.
Definition of SA justice? You murder your parents and the court lets you off because you're an orphan!!

yeah, i dont think id like to live in South Africa, ive heard alot of bad things about living there. I would definatly go back on holiday there without a second thought. I found their buses interesting (although I wouldnt dare go on them), mostly seeing coach-like buses but also English examples like the Alexander ALX200 and even a few Routemasters!

Mal Oh yeah I knew that, they seem to have their hands full - I work in a hospital here in Sydney and during one training session that involved people from other areas of it, there was a nurse who had just come from Jo'burg and the stories about how they're set up made my jaw drop, here the security guards are unarmed , there they're armed to the teeth and they have to lay out the hospital so that the emergency department is seperate from the rest of the hospital, that seperate building is locked down, it resembles a fort almost, especially at night. Basically they had problems with gangs shooting each other up, the person being brought to the hospital, the opposing gang finding out and storming the hospital to finish off the job
